While Florida can still add to its roster, the Gators appear largely finished in the transfer portal after 28 additions. Head coach Jon Sumrall’s roster unofficially stands at 106 players as of Wednesday, January 21st
Florida’s first spring practice is scheduled for Tuesday, March 3, with the annual Orange and Blue Game set for Saturday, April 11.
With the roster mostly complete, Gator Country will begin breaking down each position group, starting with quarterbacks.
QUARTERBACKS
R-So. Aaron Philo
Florida added just one quarterback via the transfer portal: Georgia Tech’s Aaron Philo. Serving as Haynes King’s backup, Philo saw limited playing time with the Yellow Jackets.
The rising redshirt sophomore played in eight games across two seasons with Georgia Tech, completing 59 of 102 passes (57.8%) for 938 yards, two touchdowns, and three interceptions.
In his lone career start, Philo tossed for 373 yards in a 59-12 win vs. Gardner-Webb on September 6th, 2025, recording a touchdown pass and an interception in the contest.
Rated as a three-star high school prospect out of Bogart, Georgia, Philo became Georgia’s all-time passing leader with 13,922 yards, breaking the record previously held by current Jacksonville Jaguars quarterback Trevor Lawrence.
Philo ranks third in Georgia high school history with 159 touchdown passes and tied Georgia H.S. single-season record with 56 touchdown passes as a senior in 2023.
As a three-year starter, Philo led Prince Avenue Christian School to back-to-back state championships as a junior and senior (2022 and 2023).
Although he may not be considered a true dual-threat quarterback, Philo is capable of hurting defenses with his legs. The 6’2, 220-pound quarterback has combined for 96 rushing yards and one touchdown on 16 attempts across two seasons.
Philo possesses the athleticism to escape pressure and pick up extra yardage when plays break down. Georgia Tech even called a few designed runs for Philo, which he handled comfortably. What impressed me the most on film was his ability to keep his eyes down field while evading a pass rush.
Philo may not overwhelm you with size, athleticism, or arm strength, but his experience within Buster Faulkner’s offense gives him a clear advantage heading into spring camp. Entering his third season in the system, Philo’s knowledge of the scheme and playbook separates him from the rest of the quarterback room.
R-Fr. Tramell Jones Jr.
The Gators were able to retain freshman quarterback Tramell Jones Jr., which meant they didn’t need to go shopping for a backup. The importance of Jones Jr.’s return cannot be underestimated. In the transfer portal and NIL era of college football, true quarterback competitions are increasingly rare, especially without a spring portal window.
Philo vs. Jones Jr. is as close to a legitimate quarterback competition as you can get. With Florida already having made one portal addition at quarterback, finding someone of Jones Jr.’s caliber would have been difficult, making his return to Gainesville a smart investment.
The 6’0, 203 pound quarterback appeared in two games throughout his true freshman campaign, completing 21-35 passes for 191 yards and two touchdowns.
Fresh off an ankle injury suffered in his senior year, Jones Jr. started his first spring camp at Florida buried on the depth chart as QB4. As Florida moved closer to the 2025 season, he worked his way into the backup role behind DJ Lagway.
Jones Jr. actually outperformed Lagway in Florida’s season opener against Long Island, looking calm in the pocket and showing the ability to work through his progressions while throwing for 131 yards and two touchdowns.
The Jacksonville native made his second appearance in the second half against Kentucky after Lagway was benched following three first half interceptions. Things didn’t go so smoothly for Jones Jr. as he completed just 9-17 passes for 60 yards. Florida’s receivers also didn’t help his case with three drops in the second half alone.
Jones Jr. is more of a dual-threat quarterback than he was given credit for out of high school, showing comfort in the pocket while excelling in scramble situations. He has also made noticeable gains in arm strength since last spring.
R-Jr. Aidan Warner
Redshirt junior quarterback Aidan Warner re-signed with Florida for the 2026 season, giving Florida more of a veteran presence in the locker room.
Warner joined the program as a PWO in spring of 2024 and ended up beating out Clay Millen for the third string quarterback role that season.
While Warner didn’t appear in any games in 2025, the 6’3, 204-pound quarterback was thrown into the fire in 2024 following Lagway’s injury vs. Georgia. Having repped during the season for less than three weeks, Warner completed 7 of 22 passes for 66 yards and an interception in a 34-20 loss to Georgia.
In his first and only career start vs. Texas, Warner completed 12-25 passes for 132 yards and two interceptions.
While Warner isn’t expected to compete for playing time after being beaten out by the younger Tramell Jones Jr. last season, he still has a chance to hold onto the third-string quarterback role.
Fr. Will Griffin
Four-star Will Griffin ranks as the 14th quarterback in the country, according to 247Sports Composite ranking.
Playing varsity football since seventh grade, Griffin racked up 12,299 passing yards and 143 passing touchdowns over his high school career. His senior season at Jesuit High in Tampa, Florida, featured 2,534 passing yards, 37 passing touchdowns, and six rushing scores.
Standing at 6’3, 230 pounds, Griffin has a ready to play build and enough athleticism to avoid pressure and throw on the run. Griffin is confident in the pocket and has the arm strength to make throws at all levels of the defense.
Griffin made the Elite 11 Finals roster and played in the Under Armour All-American Game as a junior.
