The Florida Gators continued their big recruiting momentum on Wednesday afternoon as they received an out of state commitment.
Defensive end Antwaun Powell (6-3, 234, Portsmouth, VA. IC Norcom) committed to Florida over Virginia Tech on Wednesday afternoon after taking an official visit to Gainesville last week.
“I feel the best decision for me and I’m excited to announce that I’m 100% committed to the University of Florida,” Powell tweeted.
Powell had a chance during his official visit to meet with defensive coordinator Todd Grantham about how he would fit into Florida’s defense.
“It’s called the BUCK position and I think it fits me well,” Powell said of where Florida wants him to play. “He showed me film of [Jachai] Polite and he thinks it fits me well.”
Head coach Dan Mullen also stressed to Powell that if he wasn’t ready to work then Florida wasn’t the place for him.
“He said that he coaches hard,” he said of the message from Mullen. “So if I come to Florida be prepared to be a hard worker.”
Powell is the 18th commitment in the class of 2020 and he joins an impressive list of guys on the defensive side of the ball including linebacker Derek Wingo who just flipped to the Gators over the weekend from Penn State.
