Antonio Callaway takes step towards return

Antonio Callaway took a step towards rejoining the Florida Gators football team on Tuesday, according to his attorney Huntley Johnson.

“Antonio Callaway’s interim suspension has been modified so that he can attend class on campus at The University of Florida,” Johnson said in a statement.

Callaway has not been with the team since January due to an alleged student conduct code violation that stems from a violation that allegedly occurred in December. Jim McElwain said just last week at the SEC spring meetings that Callaway was not enrolled in classes for Florida’s first summer session, “Summer A.”

Johnson also revealed that Callaway would also be permitted to use the facilities at Florida as well.

“We are working through the process that The University has in place to reach a final resolution in this matter,” Johnson said.

As a freshman Callaway caught 35 passes for 678 yards and four touchdowns. He also returned two punts for touchdowns, including one against Alabama in the SEC Championship game.

A South Florida native, Nick developed a passion for all things sports at a very young age. His love for baseball was solidified when he saw Al Leiter’s no-hitter for the Marlins live in May of 1996. He was able to play baseball in college but quickly realized there isn’t much of a market for short, slow outfielders that hit around the Mendoza line. Wanting to continue with sports in some capacity he studied journalism at the University of Central Florida. Nick got his first start in the business as an intern for a website covering all things related to the NFL draft before spending two seasons covering the Florida football team at Bleacher Report. That job led him to GatorCountry. When he isn’t covering Gator sports, Nick enjoys hitting way too many shots on the golf course, attempting to keep up with his favorite t.v. shows and watching the Heat, Dolphins and Marlins.
