AUBURN, Ala. – The No. 10 Florida men’s tennis team rallied from a 3-0 deficit to beat No. 13 Alabama, 4-3, in Friday’s quarterfinals of the SEC Men’s Tennis Tournament at the Yarbrough Tennis Center. The victory moved coach Andy Jackson’s team into the semifinals for the seventh straight year.

The Gators (17-7) dropped the doubles point and trailed 1-0. Carlos Cueto and Alex Lacroix, who had a 22-match winning streak over the last three months, fell to Alabama’s Rick Doverspike and Michael Thompson, 8-4. The Crimson Tide clinched the doubles point as Saketh Myneni and Billy Mertz scored an 8-4 victory over Florida’s Johnny Hamui and Jeff Dadamo.

The Crimson Tide quickly made it 3-0 with No. 22 Myneni scored a 6-4, 6-1 victory over No. 21 Cueto at No. 1 singles and Dan Bulkema of Alabama beat Antoine Benneteau, 6-4, 6-1.

But the Gators weren’t going to take an early flight home. Hamui started the comeback when he defeated Mertz, 6-4, 6-3, at No. 5 singles. Then Dadamo beat Michael Jung, 7-5, 6-3, at No. 6 singles to pull Florida within a point, 3-2.

Joey Burkhardt evened the match with a 7-5, 6-1 victory over Alabama’s Thompson, leaving No. 30 Lacroix and No. 87 Mathieu Thiabaudeau to battle it out at No. 2 singles for the final team point. Lacroix took the first set, 6-4 but dropped the second 4-6. But then the Florida sophomore from Paris won the final set, 6-3.

That moved the Gators into Saturday’s semifinal round. No. 1 seed Mississippi, a 4-2 winner over No. 8 Louisiana State, will provide the opposition at noon EDT.
