GREENSBORO, N.C. – The No. 1 Florida men’s track and field team dominated the competition on the second day to win the NCAA East Regional Saturday at the Irwin Belk Track on the campus of North Carolina A&T University. It was the Gators’ first men’s title since the 2004 season.
Florida finished first with 84 points, 22 ahead of South Carolina with Georgia another three points back. The Florida women, who are ranked No. 16 in the latest track poll, finished fourth in their competition. Florida State won the women’s title with 71 points, followed by Penn State (60), Miami, Fla. (51) and the Gators (48).
“Our goal coming into the meet was to qualify as many people as possible for nationals,” Florida head coach Mike Holloway said, “and I think, for the most part, we were able to do that. We had a few obstacles and a couple of disappointments, but I thought our team did a good job of overcoming them and getting the job done.”
The regional title was the third by the Gators since the current qualification format was instituted in 2003. Florida’s men have finished either first or second in the regional ever since then.
“I am proud of our guys – they did a great job,” Holloway said. “The good thing about it is that it gives us some great momentum heading into the national meet in two weeks.”
The Gators have at least 18 qualifying positions for the upcoming NCAA Championships at the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville June 10-13. That number includes 13 individuals and two relay teams. Florida could receive more spots in the championships when the NCAA releases its at-large selections later this week.
Junior thrower Mariam Kevkhishvili, ranked No. 1 in the women’s shot put, won the regional title for the second straight year with a toss of 58 feet, 10¾ inches. Kevkhishvili had to overcome an illness earlier in the week that limited her practice time.
“She’s been sick all week, so I’m pleased that she did as well as she did,” Florida throws coach Steve Lemke said. “But that’s just Mariam. She’s a competitor. She won the event but, just like anything else, this was a competition with herself as well to see how far she could throw.”
Kevkhishvili led an impressive showing by Florida’s women’s shot putters, as she and freshman Keely Medeiros each automatically qualified for the upcoming NCAA Championships by finishing among the top five in the event. Medeiros was fourth with a mark of 52 feet, two inches, while freshman Fidela James finished eighth with a personal-best throw of 50 feet and one-half inch.
“Keely did her job, making it to the NCAAs,” Lemke said. “It wasn’t her best performance of the year, but she survived and that’s what you have to do at a meet like this. For Fidela, in the first regional meet of her career, to make the final and score is a great way for her to end her freshman season.”
Junior jumper Shara Proctor advanced to Fayetteville in the long jump and triple jump. Friday, Proctor qualified in the women’s long jump before following that up Saturday with a runner-up finish in the women’s triple jump. Her triple jump effort of 45 feet, one inch established a new school record and personal best for the Antiguan jumper.
Freshman jumper Christian Taylor, the 2009 NCAA Indoor triple jump champion who was already qualified for the Outdoor meet, finished second in the event with a personal-best effort of 53 feet, 5½ inches.
The Florida men’s 4×100-meter relay team, ranked No. 1 coming into the meet, finished second in a time of 39.03 seconds. The quartet included Dennis Martin, Calvin Smith, Terrell Wilks and Jeremy Hall.
Hall and Wilks also qualified individually in the 100 and 200 dashes. Wilks placed second in the 100 meters (10.17) and was second in the 200 (20.64), while Hall was fourth in both the 100 (10.22) and 200 (20.89). Smith finished second in the 400, qualifying for the nationals with a time of 45.30 seconds.
Carlos Phillips, the 2008 NCAA East Regional 800-meter champion, couldn’t defend but finished runner-up in 1:49.45 and qualified for the NCAA Championships. Phillips, Smith, sophomore Lamarr Davis and senior R.J. Anderson ran the 4×400 relay and finished second in 3:04.85.
Junior javelin thrower Evelien Dekkers, who won the event at the 2009 SEC Outdoor Championships on campus, finished fourth with a throw of 164 feet. Men hurdlers William Wynne and Kallinka Pitt were fourth (13.78) and fifth (13.84), respectively, in the 110-meter hurdles.
