Lauren Embree wins SEC weekly award

UF’s Lauren Embree (Marco Island, Fla.) was named the Southeastern Conference Women’s Tennis Player of the Week, the league office announced Monday. This is the second time this season Embree has been honored with the league’s weekly award, also earning notice on March 5.

The Gator junior won both of her singles and doubles matches in UF’s only dual match last week, as she helped the Gators (18-1) capture the SEC Regular Season Championship outright.

Both of Embree’s wins were the first on both courts in the road victory at South Carolina, where she and her doubles partner Joanna Mather (Duluth, Ga.) earned their 16th consecutive win, a run tied for the seventh longest in program history.

Florida dropped the doubles point for only the second time this year, but it was Embree who set the tone on the singles court where she defeated Jaklin Alawi 6-1, 6-1, for her 12th straight singles victory and gave Florida its first team point of the match.

Embree capped her dual match regular-season in SEC matches to a perfect 10-0 this year, while extending her career record versus league opponents to 29-0. She also finished 11-0 in SEC dual match doubles action with Saturday’s win.

Florida earned the No. 1 seed and one of four first-round byes in the SEC Tournament, which begins Thur., April 19 in Oxford, Miss. The Gators open play on Fri., April 20 against the winner of the match between Tennessee and Auburn.
