Gators track teams head off to NCAA meet

The Florida Gators track teams conclude the season this week at the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships Wednesday through Sunday at John McDonnell Field on the campus of the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville.

Coach Mike Holloway, named Monday as the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association South Region men’s track and field head coach of the year, is leading a contingent that could challenge for the men’s title.

The Gators, who won the East Regional men’s title, are ranked No. 2 coming into the national championships. They have 14 scoring opportunities on the men’s side. The women’s team, which captured the SEC Outdoor Championship, is ranked No. 14 and will be looking for a Top 10 finish with their eight scoring opportunities.

The Gators enter the four-day meet with two top seeds.

Junior thrower Mariam Kevkhishvili is the reigning SEC and NCAA East Regional shot put champion. She won the NCAA indoor shot put title and has the top throw of 59 feet, 7¼ inches this spring.

The men’s 4×100 relay team has the nation’s best time this spring of 38.74 seconds. The team consists of Dennis Martin, Calvin Smith, Terrell Wilks and Jeremy Hall. Smith, who also competes in the 400 meters and 4×400 relay team, was named the South Region’s runner of the year by the USTFCCCA. Hall and Wilks also will compete in both the 100- and 200-meter dashes.

Other notables competing include SEC javelin champion Evelien Dekkers. SEC decathlon champion Gray Horn and NCAA East Regional pole vault champion Natalie Moser.

Last season, the Florida women finished ninth overall, while the men were 15th.
