Elliott picks up award

Matt Elliot (Peoria, Ill.) had a great start to his colliegate swimming career over the weekend with his performance at the All-Florida Invitational. As such, he was rewarded for his showing by being named SEC Male Freshman of the week. This is Florida’s first SEC weekly honor of the 2011 season.

In the Gators first-place finish, Elliott had a team-high six first-place finishes (three individual and three relay). He swept the breast events, finishing the 100 in 55.64 seconds and the 200 in 1:59.06. The freshman also won the 400 IM with a NCAA “B” cut elligible time of 3:50.96.

Elliott contributed to victories for the 200- and 400-yard medley along with the 400-yard freestyle relay teams.

The freshman will look to continue his early success along with the rest of the Gators when they open conference competition against LSU on Saturday at 1 p.m. EST at the O’Connell Center.
