Cercone named SEC Women’s Tennis Freshman of Week

The University of Florida’s Alex Cercone (Seminole, Fla.) was named the Southeastern Conference Women’s Tennis Freshman of the Week, the league announced Wednesday.

Cercone helped the Gators (17-1, 6-0 SEC) earn conference sweeps against Ole Miss and Mississippi State last week, as she posted a combined 3-0 singles and doubles record.

Cercone played a career-high No. 3 in singles in the match against the Bulldogs and a continued to play a career-high No. 1 in doubles.

In singles, Cercone made her collegiate debut at the No. 3 position in the lineup and didn’t miss a step, as she earned a 6-3, 6-2 victory against Danielle Terpko.

In the road match at Ole Miss, Cercone overcame a one-set deficit and rallied for the 2-6, 6-2, 6-1 win that gave UF a 3-0 lead in the team scoring. That victory was Cercone’s 25th win this year.

On the doubles court, Cercone paired with sophomore Allie Will (Boca Raton, Fla.) at the No. 1 position at Ole Miss, where the Gator duo upset 21st-ranked Kristi Boxx and Abby Gurthrie, 8-4 and provided the clinching doubles-point win.
