Florida Gators soccer defeats Georgia at home

Under an overcast sky in a town that was about to brace itself for one of the biggest storms in state history, the 16th ranked Florida Gators squared off with SEC arch rival Georgia Bulldogs. The Gators won the game by a 3-1 margin.

First Half

The Gators started slow in the first half allowing Georgia to attack quite easily and get a couple of dangerous shots that just grazed over the net. After these attacks early, it was all Gators. The Gators attacked the Dawgs and were unsuccessful in many impressive tries. It was with under four minutes to play in the first half when Meggie Dougherty Howard rifled a shot from inside the box and into the back of the net to give the Gators the 1-0 lead going into halftime. The Gators are 5-0-0 when leading the game going to halftime this season.

Second Half

Four minutes into the second half the Gators were rewarded a penalty kick after a handball in the box by Georgia, and the Gators would make good on their opportunity. Savannah Jordan sunk the penalty kick and the Gators were now out to a commanding 2-0 lead in the 49th minute of the game. Jordan was not done with the Dawgs just yet, she scored again on a masterful one-touch goal from the top of the box to give the Gators a 3-0 lead. The Gators held on to their three score lead before Georgia snuck a goal past the Gators in the 72nd minute of the contest.

The No. 16 Gators got a much needed SEC win at home before traveling to Ole Miss this Sunday to face the Rebels. The Gators improve to 9-3 this season and 4-2 in conference play.
