New head coach Jim McElwain hasn’t wasted any time getting to know his new contingent.

While the Gators were warming up for their matchup against ECU in the Birmingham Bowl, Coach Mac braved the rain, wind and mud to find Gator fans tailgating around the Legion Field stadium.

McElwain is not coaching the team in any capacity of the bowl game, leaving those duties to previously named interim head coach DJ Durkin, so he had time to take with GatorNation.

Watch below for some highlights of Mac’s time tailgating and hear from him and fans as to why this was so important.

About Kassidy Hill

Born into a large family of sports fanatics and wordsmiths alike, sports journalism came natural to Kassidy. It’s more than a passion; it’s simply a part of who she is. Hailing from Alabama in the midst of typical Iron Bowl family, she learned very quickly just how deep ties in the SEC could run. She came to Gainesville after college to pursue a degree as television sports reporter but quickly realized she missed writing. She’s excited to now marry the two aspects for Gator fans. She loves Jesus, her daddy and football; wants to be Billy Donovan’s best friend and firmly believes that offensive lineman are the best people on earth. Follow her on Twitter @KassidyGHill

This is so awesome, Coach Mac is a people person. If he can mix in all the other stuff and be successful he is going to be one loved coach at Florida. Go Mac, you tha man!

That is something coach chump would never do. If mac can turn the offense around I believe he can get us back to the top. Looking forward to next year
