No. 1 Gators pay visit to the Ol’ Ball Coach

Top-ranked Florida’s 19-game winning streak will be on the line Saturday when the Gators travel to Columbia, S.C., to face an old friend — former Florida Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback (1966) and 1996 Florida national championship head coach Steve Spurrier. Spurrier, now the Ol’ Ball Coach for the South Carolina Gamecocks, would love nothing better than to hand his alma mater a loss in its final SEC game of the season. Florida is 9-0 overall and is trying to defend its 2008 national championship under head coach Urban Meyer. Kickoff is at 3:30 p.m. in Williams-Brice Stadium with CBS televising the game nationally.

The other two teams (1995, 1996) to start 9-0 were coached by Steve Spurrier, who is now the head coach at South Carolina. … The Gators are seeking their first 8-0 SEC finish since their 1996 national championship season.

DOODLE DO’S: South Carolina quarterback Stephen Garcia has four 300-yard passing games this season, including the last three games. … South Carolina has never beaten a team ranked No. 1. … A victory by South Carolina would give Steve Spurrier 106 in the SEC, tying him with Mississippi’s John Vaught. Bear Bryant totaled 159 at Kentucky and Alabama. … The Gamecocks have won seven straight home games over two seasons. … South Carolina is one of two Under Armour equipment schools (Maryland the other) that will wear specially designed uniforms today – all black with desert camouflage featuring the Wounded Warrior Project logo. Some of the uniforms will be auctioned off following the game, with 100 percent of the proceeds being donated to the Wounded Warrior Project. … Three wounded warriors – U.S. Air Force Sgt. Michael Williams, U.S. Marine Corps (retired) Corporal Steve Diaz and U.S. Army (retired) Staff Sgt. Dan Nevins – will serve as honorary captains for the Gamecocks.

South Carolina, Steve Spurrier (Florida, 1967). He is 34-26 in his fifth season at South Carolina and 177-66-2 in 19 years as a head coach (he spent two years at Duke and 12 seasons at Florida). He coached the Gators to the 1996 national championship; a former winner of the Heisman Trophy (1966 as Florida’s quarterback), Spurrier coached Florida quarterback Danny Wuerffel, who won the Heisman Trophy in 1996. Against Florida, he is 1-3.
