Franz Beard’s Basketball Confidential

It’s not a secret that Florida’s top target for 2010 is Brandon Knight (6-3, 180, Fort Lauderdale, FL Pine Crest), who has been considered the best player in his age group since he was 13. Knight might end all the speculation about where he’s going to go to college in November, right after the early signing period. Based on the information that’s available now, it would seem that this will be a two-team race: Florida and UConn.

In Florida’s favor is that Knight has a great relationship with Billy Donovan and a friendship with Taurean Green, the point guard on Florida’s back-to-back NCAA championship teams. Green played his senior year in high school at Cardinal Gibbons in Fort Lauderdale.

It could also work in Florida’s favor if 2009’s best guard Kenny Boynton (6-2, 180, Plantation, FL American Heritage, #3 ESPN Top 100) commits to the Gators. Boynton and Knight are a dynamic duo for Fort Lauderdale-based Team Breakdown, the defending AAU national champions.

Franz Beard
Back in January of 1969, the late, great Jack Hairston, then the sports editor of the Jacksonville Journal, called me on the phone one night and asked me if I wanted to work for him. I said yes. The entire interview took 30 seconds. It's my experience that whenever the interview lasts 30 seconds or less, I get the job. In the 48 years that I've been writing and getting paid for it, I've covered Super Bowls, World Series, NCAA basketball championships, BCS championship games, heavyweight title fights and what seems like thousands of college football, baseball and basketball games. I'm a columnist and special assignments editor for Gator Country once again, writing about the only team that ever mattered to me, the Florida Gators.
