The Florida Gators coaching staff isn’t wasting any time in recruiting and last week the Gators coaching staff offered a prospect that is entering his sophomore year of high school.
That prospect was cornerback Christian Tutt (5-10, 183, Thomson, GA High) who visited the Gators practice last week.
“The head coach, Coach [Jim] McElwain was the coach that offered me,” Tutt said. “I was at the practice and I was talking to the defensive coordinator [Geoff Collins] and he brought me over to Coach McElwain and that’s when he told me about the offer.”
Tutt has been lobbying for an offer from the Florida Gators for some time and now that he has it, he’s proud of it.
“The offer meant a lot to me and it was an offer that I’ve been waiting on,” Tutt said. “I’ve been trying to get in contact with Florida a lot lately and we finally got a chance to come down there, so it means a lot.”
When McElwain told Tutt about the offer the Gators head coach also made sure to let him know where the best defensive backs play college football.
“Coach McElwain knew about my nickname ‘King’ so he was talking to me about that,” Tutt said. “He said that Florida was the real “DBU” and that he wanted me to join him at Florida and stuff like that.”
Tutt had a chance to watch Collins and the rest of the Florida Gators go through practice. He also had a chance to meet the coaching staff and he walked away impressed by the coaches’ personalities.
“I liked Coach Collins’ defense and the way he coached,” Tutt said. “Really I like the way all of the coaches coach and they are going to keep it real with you. They aren’t going to sugar coat anything, even when it comes to recruiting somebody.”
One thing about this coaching staff at Florida is that they are relentless in recruiting and Kirk Callahan made sure to send a message to Tutt that he will remember for a long time.
“Coach Callahan pulled me into my office and he was talking to me about the style of defense they run and stuff,” Tutt said. “He said that he knows that I have a couple more years of the recruiting process but that he really wants me to be a Gator when it’s time to sign and that he wants me to come to the ‘real DBU.’”
This fall Tutt says he plans to return to watch the Florida Gators football team play and he wants to watch his favorite player in action in the Swamp.
“My favorite player is Vernon [Hargreaves], definitely,” he said. “I kind of model my game after Vernon and I really watch him everyday and try to learn from him.”
INSIDERS TAKE: Tutt is a phenomenal athlete to be a 2018 prospect and he’s likely to be one of the top cornerbacks in his class and the Gators are getting on him early. Look for Tutt to visit the Gators several times this fall.
