The Florida Gators hosted two big time prospects on campus for Monday’s spring practice and one of those prospects was from California.
The California prospect was offensive lineman Wyatt Davis (6-5, 300, Bellflower, CA St. John Bosco) who came into the visit without an offer from the Gators but he left with good news.
“Coach [Jim] McElwain was the coach that gave me my Florida offer,” Davis said. “They were in team meetings and I was in there and he pulled me out and sat me and my dad down in his office. He said that he was offering me a scholarship to attend Florida.”
McElwain expanded on why he offered Davis a scholarship and the offensive lineman left impressed by the Gators head coach.
“He said that he liked my film a lot and that need linemen real bad right now,” Davis said. “He was telling me about the program and his plans for them down the road and he said that Florida was a good opportunity for me. I really liked personality and he’s very intense.”
After meeting with McElwain the offensive lineman got the chance to go out to practice and felt comfortable with the Florida offense.
“Practice was very intense and up-tempo, I loved it,” Davis said. “The offense was very high tempo and similar to what we run in high school now. It was a good fit for me and very quick. There was no standing around out there.”
Despite not getting a whole lot of time with offensive line coach Mike Summers Davis left Florida feeling like he could play for Summers.
“Coach Summers is real laid back but I liked the way he was coaching techniques during practice,” Davis said. “I really liked everything that he was teaching. I didn’t get to spend as much one-on-one time with him but I was able to watch him a lot but I really loved the way he teaches hand placement.”
Davis had to travel cross country to see Florida on Monday but the Gators made a big enough impression on Davis that they will likely get a return trip from him now.
“I was able to see all of the facilities and they just blew me away, they were incredible,” Davis said. “After seeing everything and meeting everyone Florida is definitely a school I’m serious about and I’m going to look at more. I plan to return to Florida for another visit.
INSIDERS TAKE: Davis is on a southern tour of schools as of late and just about every school that he’s visited has offered him during the trip. It really seems as if Florida made a big impression on Davis and his father during the trip.
