Preview
Coming off of two consecutive losses, the Florida Gators are looking to bounce back on Saturday against the Charlotte 49ers in the Orange Bowl Classic. Charlotte lost its previous game on the road at Wake Forrest, but holds a 6-3 record this season that includes a win over Oregon State.
This will be Florida’s 17th consecutive game away from home and the 14th neutral site game in Mike White’s two seasons. Since White arrived, the Gators have played 17 true road games, compared to just 16 true home games, with just 34 percent of their games in Gainesville.
Braxton Ogbueze, who transferred from Florida following the 2012-13 season after averaging 0.8 points and 0.6 rebounds per game in 107 minutes as a freshman, is now Charlotte’s second-leading scorer. He averages 13.2 points per game behind Jon Davis’ 20.2 points per game. Andrien White (12.1) and Anthony Vanhook (10.3) are also averaging double-digits for the 49ers.
Florida will appear in the Orange Bowl Classic for the 18th time. The Gators hold a 15-2 record, including six straight wins in the event. These two teams last met in the Orange Bowl Classic in 2001. Florida took the game 73-52. The Gators are 3-2 all-time against the 49ers. White was 3-0 vs. Charlotte in his time at Louisiana Tech.
The Gators need one last win as they complete this long stretch of games away from home, then it will finally be time to return to the newly renovated O’Connell Center next week.
