Florida Gators softball recap following LSU sweep

GatorCountry.com brings you this week’s Florida Gators softball review as the Gators swept a weekend series. In this recap we will break down the past week’s games, plus name a player of the week from the past week.

The Gators swept its second consecutive SEC series and in the process of that they set a Florida program record for the best start in school history, as the Gators are now 33-1 on the year.

Florida has now outscored its opponents this year by a score of 220-30 and the Gators are now 8-1 in the SEC, which is the best record in the conference.

Offensive leaders

Sophomore Kayli Kvistad continued to stay hot at the plate as she had a big home run and three RBI’s this past weekend. Kvistad also received four walks and was on base six times against LSU.

Senior Kelsey Stewart put together another good weekend from the leadoff spot as she had four hits and scored runs against LSU. Stewart also had a stolen base and a walk while getting on base five times out 10 at-bats.

Sophomore Nicole DeWitt was the hero in game two when she hit a three-run home run in the ninth to left the Gators past LSU. DeWitt scored three runs and had just three hits but it was three big hits.

 

Pitching

Tim Walton and Florida Gators softball pitching coach Jennifer Rocha threw all three of the Gators pitchers again this past weekend. The three headed-monster of a rotation now all have 10 wins this year.

Sophomore Aleshia Ocasio continued her dominating performance this year as she picked up two wins against LSU and a save in game three. Ocasio lowered her nation leading ERA to 0.36 after not giving up a run in Baton Rouge.

Freshman Kelly Barnhill now leads the team with 106 strikeouts this year after going 6 2/3 innings against LSU for the win on Saturday. Barnhill didn’t give up an earned run through her work on Saturday.

Junior Delanie Gourley pitched 6 1/3 innings of shutout softball against LSU before being lifted for Ocasio on Friday night. Gourley had seven strikeouts while allowed just four hits through her work.

Player of the week

Aleshia Ocasio is this week’s player of the week after pitching 10 innings against LSU without giving up a run. Ocasio only gave up five hits through her appearances and she continues to have a dominant ERA of 0.36.

This week’s schedule

Florida doesn’t play a mid week game this week as they wait on the Alabama Crimson Tide to arrive in Gainesville for yet another big SEC series.
