Tyrie Cleveland out for the LSU game with an injury

The Florida Gators will be without their leading receiver this weekend when the LSU Tigers come to town. Tyrie Cleveland has a high ankle sprain and Jim McElwain says he doesn’t expect the sophomore will be able to go on Saturday.

“Tyrie Cleveland will be out, expect him to be out anyways,” McElwain said Monday. “He’s in a boot right now. You know, the dreaded not normal ankle (sprain), but high ankle.”

Cleveland has 15 receptions for 326 yards and two touchdowns on the season — leading the team in each category. Cleveland owns receptions of 63, 50, 49 and 45 yards. He’s the only receiver on the team with a reception of over 40 yards. Cleveland also had a 98-yard reception for Florida last year against LSU.

“He’s definitely a big problem for defenses. He’s a vertical threat,” receiver Josh Hammond said. “It’s a next man up mentality though.”

A South Florida native, Nick developed a passion for all things sports at a very young age. His love for baseball was solidified when he saw Al Leiter’s no-hitter for the Marlins live in May of 1996. He was able to play baseball in college but quickly realized there isn’t much of a market for short, slow outfielders that hit around the Mendoza line. Wanting to continue with sports in some capacity he studied journalism at the University of Central Florida. Nick got his first start in the business as an intern for a website covering all things related to the NFL draft before spending two seasons covering the Florida football team at Bleacher Report. That job led him to GatorCountry. When he isn’t covering Gator sports, Nick enjoys hitting way too many shots on the golf course, attempting to keep up with his favorite t.v. shows and watching the Heat, Dolphins and Marlins.
