Recapping the Louisiana Lafayette series for the Florida Gators softball team

GatorCountry.com brings you this week’s Florida Gators softball review as the Gators finished the week with a 3-1 record. In this recap we will break down the past week’s games, plus name a player of the week from the past week.

The number two ranked Gators went on the road to Lafayette, Louisiana to take on Louisiana Lafayette and won two out of three against the Rajin Cajuns in out of conference play. Florida also run ruled North Florida on Wednesday at home last week.

Florida is now 8-1 on the year and head home for the next eight games including a weekend tournament

Offensive leaders

Junior Amanda Lorenz moved up to the lead-off spot over the weekend and collected seven hits last week in four games. Lorenz scores two runs and drove in two runs from the lead-off spot as well.

Sophomore Nicole DeWitt had a fantastic Saturday that saw her hit two home runs and drive in four runs. Last week in total she collected five RBI’s and scored five times.

Pitching

Tim Walton and Florida Gators softball pitching coach Jennifer Rocha threw just two of the Gators pitchers this past week. Walton used just Kelly Barnhill and Aleshia Ocasio this week after using all four pitchers last weekend.

Junior Kelly Barnhill threw a no-hitter against North Florida and through three appearances threw 15 innings had 21 strikeouts and walked just four batters. Barnhill picked up two wins last week.

Senior Aleshia Ocasio picked up the Gators only loss after giving up a walk-off home run to Louisiana but overall had a solid week. Ocasio pitched 13.1 innings and struck out 12 batters while only giving up two runs.

Player of the week

Junior pitcher Kelly Barnhill threw another no-hitter to give her this week’s player of the week honors. Barnhill no supports a 0.29 ERA and is 3-0 on the year while she has struck out 30 batters in 24 innings pitched.

Andrew Spivey
Andrew always knew he wanted to be involved with sports in some capacity. He began by coaching high school football for six years before deciding to pursue a career in journalism. While coaching, he was a part of two state semifinal teams in the state of Alabama. Given his past coaching experience, he figured covering recruiting would be a perfect fit. He began his career as an intern for Rivals.com, covering University of Florida football recruiting. After interning with Rivals for six months, he joined the Gator Country family as a recruiting analyst.
