McElwain after another Miami commit

New Florida Gators head coach Jim McElwain spent most of Wednesday in the South Florida area, mostly recruiting prospects that are committed elsewhere.

One of those prospects he visited was Miami running back commit Jordan Scarlett (5-11, 205, Fort Lauderdale, FL St. Thomas Aquinas) who enjoyed the visit from McElwain.

“It was a great visit with Coach McElwain on Wednesday,” Scarlett said. “It was great getting to meet him, he’s a great guy and sounds like a really good coach.”

Scarlett did a little homework on McElwain prior to Wednesday’s visit but McElwain also had a message about his past for Scarlett.

“Coach McElwain was telling me that he really needs me to come join his program at Florida,” Scarlett said. “He was telling me about all of the backs that he has coached in the past and how successful they have been in the NFL. I like that he has coached all of those backs. It’s a good situation for him and I’m interested in that.”

Scarlett committed to Miami in July and has remained solid to the Canes. While that’s still the case today, McElwain and the Florida Gators are now in the picture.

“Knowing Coach McElwain’s experience has made me more interested in Florida,” Scarlett said. “I’m still solid to my commitment to Miami at this moment though.”

The Gators have also positioned themselves well enough to get a visit from the talented running back but two other instate schools will also receive a visit.

“I’m planning to take an official to Florida in January,” Scarlett said. “I also plan to take an official to Miami and Florida State in January too. That’s the only three that I plan on taking.”

INSIDERS TAKE: Florida is going to make a run for Scarlett and I think McElwain has him very intrigued about the Gators. It will be interesting to see if the running back actually takes a visit to Florida or not in January.

  1. Get Quincy on him asap! Those two used to be teammates at the University school last year. I think fsu might scare off Scarlett with having patrick and Frasier already committed and dalvin only a sophmore next year whereas florida will have jr taylor and lane and soph powell. He will see that he can be the big name RB in our class.

Spivey, have you spoken to damien harris since we hired Mac? If we were truly o e of his top schools before I can only imagine this hire would really have his attention with coaches background.

    • Frasier is likely to decommit soon. Harris doesn’t do interviews but right now I’m told it’s a two team race between Kentucky and Ohio State.

  2. If Frasier changes his mind, I expect Scarlett to go to FSU. It seems pretty clear that he’ll go to FSU if they have room for him, unless Frasier changes they won’t have room. The best thing for UF is if Frasier stays at FSU.
