Huggins explains why he committed to the Florida Gators

The Florida Gators picked up their 12th commitment on Sunday afternoon after a weekend full of official visitors for Dan Mullen and his staff.

Defensive back John Huggins (6-0, 200, Daytona Beach, FL. Mainland) committed to Florida over Florida State and several other schools.

“It just felt like a family and they established that with me,” Huggins said on why he committed to Florida. “They told me that I was important to them and they’re important to me. They’re the best fit for me.”

Head coach Dan Mullen and the rest of the staff were happy to hear Huggins’ decision to commit and they gave him the proper reaction.

“They were excited and jumping up and down,” he said on the staff’s reaction. “They were glad and excited to have me.”

Defensive coordinator Todd Grantham has been the main recruiter for Huggins since he arrived at Florida and he made sure to tell Huggins he was needed in Gainesville.

“He told me the same thing he’s been telling me, that there’s opportunity to play early,” Huggins said on Grantham’s message to him. “He said that I’m versatile and that I can be a big impact on the back end of the defense. He said that the opportunity is great at Florida.”

Grantham didn’t specify where Huggins would play at in the Gators defense but mentioned several different options.

“Corner, nickel and safety,” he said on where Grantham says he can play at. “He said just wherever I fit when I get on campus.”

This weekend Huggins also had the chance to see new defensive backs coach Charlton Warren who was hired on Friday.

“Yeah I did,” Huggins said on if he met new defensive backs coach Charlton Warren this weekend. “He’s a good dude and knows a lot of football. I can’t wait for him to coach me.”

Warren already had watched film on Huggins and explained why he likes the new Gators commit so much.

“That I’m a special guy on the field,” he said on Warren’s message to him. “He said that I have a lot of intangibles and that I’m his type of defensive back.”

Heading into this weekend Huggins wasn’t planning to sign early but he said that all changed and he will sign on Wednesday with Florida.

“Committing this weekend, I might as well just wrap everything up,” Huggins said on why he decided to sign this weekend. “Get everything off of my back and get everything out of the way so I can enjoy the rest of my school year.”
