Florida Gators trending up for Heggie

The Florida Gators have done an incredible job of getting prospects on campus this summer and on Thursday the Gators were able to host another instate offensive lineman.

Center Brett Heggie (6-4, 290, Mount Dora, FL High) made the trip to Gainesville with his mother in hopes of getting a full a campus tour.

“It went well,” Heggie said. “I got to see a lot of the campus. I have never seen the campus before, so I was able to see a lot of that. I went through all of the athletic facilities and talked to the coaches. My mom and I were real impressed with how close everything is together for football players like the dorms and the practice fields.”

Offensive line coach Mike Summers visited Heggie this spring and offered him shortly after watching him. On Thursday the two got a chance to have a lengthy discussion about the Gators.

“I sat down with Coach Summers for about an hour and a half and we went over everything football wise,” he said. “We talked and just started building a better relationship. He was asking me questions about how I was doing and how my process was coming along.”

Heggie has followed Florida most of the spring and he’s aware of the depth chart on the offensive line and that was something Summers reminded him of on Thursday.

“They were telling me that they really need offensive linemen bad,” Heggie said. “They said that I would be a great fit there at the center position and that I could contribute to what they’re doing there.”

Head coach Jim McElwain met Heggie briefly last spring but the two didn’t get a chance to talk. That changed when Heggie got a chance to sit in McElwain office Thursday.

“Coach McElwain sat down with my mom and I to talk to us,” he said. “He was just talking to me about the university and he was asking me about how I was doing and just normal things.”

A lot of programs have offered Heggie but the offensive lineman feels wanted at Florida.

“I think they want me a lot and I know they need linemen a lot,” Heggie said. “Today [Thursday] I got to really sit down and talk with Coach Summers and that really helped us build a better relationship.”

The Mount Dora prospect hasn’t taken many visits this summer, and that likely won’t change in July, but the Gators could receive a return visit from Heggie.

“I have the Opening in July but that’s the only thing that I have on my calendar at this moment,” he said. “I’m thinking about going back up for the Friday Night Lights camp in July at Florida.”

Summers and McElwain didn’t pressure Heggie into making a decision on Thursday but they did let him know that the class was filling up and that’s something that Heggie recognizes.

“I’m going to narrow it down soon, I think I have a top six or so,” Heggie said. “It would be nice to be done by the end of the summer but who knows. The thing that is interesting about Florida is that their class is starting to fill up so that’s the interesting part about them, but hopefully I have a decision by the end of the summer.”

INSIDERS TAKE: Florida is doing a great job of recruiting Heggie and letting him know he’s a priority and if the Gators continue to push for him then Florida is in good shape. Heggie is a guy that is a true center prospect and his recruiting has really took off this spring/summer.
