Dillon deciding between Florida and LSU

The Florida Gators have a lot of top targets still on the board but one of Jim McElwain’s biggest recruiting jobs won’t be getting an uncommitted player to choose Florida, rather holding on to one of his own.

That commit is receiver Derrick Dillon (5-11, 175, Franklinton, LA Pine) who played his last high school game last weekend at the Army All-American game in San Antonio, Texas.

“It was whole a lot of fun out there,” Dillon said. “We got a lot of cool stuff and got to meet a lot of cool people in Texas. We got to play one last game and go out on the winning team.”

Now that his high school playing days are over, Dillon is focused on his recruitment that sees two teams fighting for him.

“After the dead period ends I’m going to visit LSU, next Saturday,” Dillon said. “I’m going to see what they have to offer and then just go from there. I’m only talking to LSU and Florida right now.”

Dillon is taking that visit to LSU on January 16th but he will mull over his decision for a few weeks after that and he may even slide another visit into the mix after LSU.

“I’m going to wait till signing day to make a final decision on everything,” Dillon said. “I’m hoping to get out to Florida for a unofficial visit after my LSU visit so that I can compare the two visits.”

Dillon has been committed to the Gators since May and a lot of that has to do with the depth chart, but new head coach Jim McElwain is also helping the Gators a lot in his recruitment.

“I love Florida and they don’t have many receivers on the roster there,” Dillon said. “I know I can come in and play early there as a freshman. Now that they have Coach McElwain I know they are going to run a new offense and things are going to be real good with his offense.”

INSIDERS TAKE: If Dillon makes the visit to Florida after his LSU trip then I believe the Gators will hold onto him but if Dillon doesn’t make another trip to Florida then LSU is very likely to sign him. Florida is scheduled to go visit him the first week of the visit period that starts January 16th.

  1. I agree with Snowprint 100%….this sucks. I know it’s just a game, lighten up. Nahh, it’s not just a game to me. This class is actually embarassing. UF officials have handled everything for the last 2 years poorly. If the Gators don’t start signing some names, any frigging body at this point, I mean for the love of god. This class should have been elite, Ivey, Cowart, Jefferson, Campbell, McCloud….etc This class is loaded with kids that practically were LOCKS for UF before this season started. Now I really doubt we’ll see any one of them. What makes it worst is Alabama, FSU and Georgia are making us look stupid with they’re ridiculously impressive classes. Not to mention LSU and UT. But I get it, have some fun and watch the Gators get blasted for the next 5 years. ENJOY!

    • Dude…take a pill. It’s not that bad…and it is very expected considering. Urban ran into the same exact issue…maybe not as bad. Zook, did a little better job of recruiting guys who wanted to be at UF no matter what. Otherwise, likely they may have same or very similar class numbers and rankings. This year is wash for the most part, thanks to lack of production on offense and Muschamp being let go! We will still get some decent numbers at needed spots. I ain’t worried. Now next year…if its like this yes..then we have serious recruiting issues. Go medicate and wait until next year! The sky is not falling!!!

    • Good God.

These people cannot be Gator fans and if they are, I am embarrassed. Not that I would like to model anything after WhoreChant but they are very protective on how they let their active recruits get represented by the fans and protect them completely from rivals. I think that in this particular case, it’s a method we should follow.

Recruits read the boards and 17 year olds enjoy seeing themselves getting written up on a college periodical.

    • Primo, the class right now would be what you would expect from a team that just announced 48 hours ago it’s new coaching staff. Your post is more ridiculous than snowflakes, which I didn’t think was possible. The fact that Ivey, CeCe, Cowart, Holland, Davis etc etc all have UF at the top or near it is very encouraging. WTF do you morons expect? EVERY expert on recruiting has commented about the buzz with Mac and the new staff in the recruiting world. Jesus, were in a dead period…quit being a baby and let the coaches actually meet the recruits first and see how the visits play out. Good Lord, our fan base can be embarrassing sometimes.

  2. This is insane. I can’t understand how LSU can recruit big time receivers and throw the ball as little as they do. You are a receiver at LSU 85% of the time you will be a a decoy or a blocker for the running game. They don’t throw the ball at LSU.’

Coach Mac will throw the ball at Florida, 50/50 so where is the choice. Get five passes or more a game at Florida or one pass a game if you’re lucky at LSU. Hell they don’t even get quarterbacks who can throw the ball at LSU yet they get these great receivers going there, I just don’t understand it.

  3. here’s the diff snowfag…

all the last OC’s worked under a coach that simply did not allow the concept or idea of growth, playing the field and working outside of a box that lived between 3 yards from the line of scrimmage.

i think that all changes as the only thing i have seen from the current coach and coordinators that have players play efficient football. all the players under him have progressed

can’t say that from the past 4 years and its really been the only undoing from that regime. its a shame because he took over a broken program and did an exceptional job cleaning up the program. too bad its all about wins

FSU is derailed with the players they’ve promoted and kept the ship afloat with. their run is over
