Caleb Brantley charged with battery after altercation in Gainesville

Former Florida Gators defensive tackle Caleb Brantley has been charged with a misdemeanor battery charge after an altercation that occurred on April 13.

Alachua County Court records originally show that Brantley and the alleged victim were in a verbal altercation due to “crude comments” Brantley allegedly made. The report states that the alleged victim shoved Brantley and he responded by “striking the victim in the face knocking her unconscious.”

Brantley’s initial claim was that he was struck in the face first and responded in self-defense. The report has two eyewitnesses claiming that they saw Brantley strike the woman in the face, rendering her unconscious and displacing a tooth that will require a root canal, per the report.

On the night in question Brantley declined to press charges of battery and neither party came forward as a victim until a sworn complaint was filed with the Gainesville Police Department Friday.

A four-year player at the University of Florida, Brantley chose to forego his final year of eligibility and enter the 2017 NFL Draft. He was expected to be a second or third round draft pick in the draft that will begin this Thursday.

He was able to play baseball in college but quickly realized there isn’t much of a market for short, slow outfielders that hit around the Mendoza line. Wanting to continue with sports in some capacity he studied journalism at the University of Central Florida. Nick got his first start in the business as an intern for a website covering all things related to the NFL draft before spending two seasons covering the Florida football team at Bleacher Report. That job led him to GatorCountry.
