Women’s tennis team 5-0 after 7-0 victory over Troy

On a sunny but chilly Sunday afternoon the No. 7 Florida women’s tennis team downed Troy 7-0 at the Linder Stadium/Ring Tennis Complex.

Florida quickly won the doubles point. Florida’s No. 1 team – 26th-ranked Marrit Boonstra and Allie Will – raced to a 7-0 lead on their way to an 8-1 victory against Karoline Grymel and Leonie Guijt that was completed in 35 minutes. Competing together for the first time, senior Anastasia Revzina and freshman Carolina Hitimana completed an 8-2 victory over Lauren Simpson and Emma Smith in 45 minutes.

The doubles point clinched, another first-time doubles pairing – sophomore Claire Bartlett and freshman Brittany Borsanyi – earned an 8-6 victory over Stephanie Vieira and Rosaura Ramirez-Vega in 63 minutes.

“It was one of their first outings. … I thought they performed admirably,” Florida head coach Roland Thornqvist said.

Florida continued its dominance in singles. Hitimana won her No. 4 singles match with Stephanie Vieira, 6-0, 6-2, in just under 52 minutes.

“Caroline keeps improving. Every match she gets a little bit better and today was no exception. She gets sharper and sharper and I’ve been real pleased with her progress,” Thornqvist said.

On the No. 2 court, No. 81-ranked Boonstra also wasted little time in earning her fifth straight victory of the season, beating Lauren Simpson 6-0, 6-2. The Gators clinched the match with Revzina’s 6-2, 6-1 victory at No. 3 singles over Guijt that raised the No. 92-ranked player to 4-0 this season.

Playing for the first time at No. 1 singles, freshman Will, the 13th-ranked singles player in the nation, scored a 6-4, 6-1 victory over Karoline Grymel. Bartlett scored a 6-1, 6-0 victory at No. 5 singles over Ramirez-Vega and Borsanyi earned a 6-0, 6-4 victory at No. 6 singles over Emma Smith.

Florida’s record is now 5-0 on the season. Entering Monday’s 3 p.m. home match against South Florida, the Gators have won a school-record 81 consecutive regular-season home matches.
