Three Gators qualify for NCAA track finals

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Florida senior Natalie Moser captured the first NCAA East Regional women’s pole vault title in school history Friday in the two-day competition at the Irwin Belk Track at North Carolina A&T University.

Coach Mike Halloway’s teams qualified three athletes for the upcoming NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships at the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville June 10-13. The women’s team, ranked No. 16, was in second place with 19 points after five events, seven behind leader Virginia Tech. The No. 1 men’s team was seventh overall with nine points but has 10 athletes qualified for Saturday’s finals.

Moser had a 13-feet, 1¾-inch effort in the pole vault. Kemal Mesic, a sophomore weight thrower, was third in the shot put with a 62-foot, 4-inch throw to earn his ticket. Junior Shara Proctor finished second in the women’s long jump with a leap of 21 feet, 8¼ inches – a season’s best.

“I thought we had a good day overall,” Holloway said. “We had a couple of disappointments, but I think overall, we had strong performances from Shara in the long jump, Natalie in the pole vault and Kemal in the shot put, as well as great qualifying on the men’s side. It was a very good day and it’s a good start to get us ready for tomorrow’s finals and for the national meet.”

The Florida men’s 4×100-meter relay team (Dennis Martin, Calvin Smith, Terrell Wilks and Jeremy Hall) won its heat and finished second overall in a time of 39.32.

Hall and Wilks each qualified for the finals in both the 100-meter dash and the 200-meter dash. Smith was fourth in the men’s 400-meter dash, winning his heat and finishing in a time of 46.03.

Three of Florida’s 110-meter hurdlers advanced to the finals of the event, including Dennis Martin (13.94), Kallinka Pitt (13.74) and William Wynne (14.03). Carlos Phillips won his heat and finished third in the preliminaries of the 800 meters in 1:49.36.
