McCumber leads Florida to runner-up finish

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Auburn, led by medalist Niclas Carlsson, overcame a two-stroke Florida lead starting the day and captured the team title in the Jerry Pate National Intercollegiate Tuesday at the par-70, 7,204-yard Old Overton Club.

Carlsson closed with an even-par 70 for an 8-under-par 202 total, two strokes better than Bobby Wyatt of Alabama and three strokes ahead of Florida sophomore Tyler McCumber, who closed with a 70 for a 5-under-par 205.

Auburn finished with an 11-under-par total of 829, seven strokes ahead of coach Buddy Alexander’s Gators, who had a 2-over-par 282 final round for a 4-under-par 836 total. Alabama finished third at 838.

“Tyler has been our best player,” Alexander said. “He has had a great start to the year and we are very excited for him.”

McCumber was one of three Florida players in the Top 10. Senior Bank Vongvanij tied for fifth, shooting a 1-over 71 to close at 2-under-par 208. Sophomore Phillip Choi was ninth, closing with a 3-over-par 73 for a 1-over-par total of 211.

Sophomore Tommy Mou shot a 70 for a 4-over-par 214 total that left him tied for 13th. Senior Andres Echavarria shot a 1-over-par 71 for a 6-over-par 216 total, which left him tied for 19th.

“It wasn’t the worst day ever, but we made some mistakes today,” Alexander added. “We will get back to work and get better.”

The Gators return to action Sunday, Oct. 24 at the Isleworth Invitational in Orlando.
