Freshmen impress in SEC tennis tourney

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Florida’s Claire Bartlett and Allie Will scored singles victories on the second day of the 2009 SEC Coaches Fall Classic at Vanderbilt’s Currey Tennis Center.

Will, a freshman, picked up her second consecutive victory over a nationally ranked opponent when she beat South Carolina’s 29th-ranked Ana Zubori, who retired after the Gator rookie held a 7-5, 4-6, 3-1 lead in the second-round match. Bartlett, also a freshman, collected a 7-5, 6-3 victory over South Carolina’s Josefin Andersson.

Will and senior Anastasia Revzina downed Alabama’s 43rd-ranked Courtney McLane and Alexa Guarachi, 8-4.

In singles action, Revzina dropped a 6-3, 6-2 decision to Vanderbilt’s 46th-ranked Catherine Newman, while Gator sophomore Joanna Mather lost to Alabama’s Guarachi, 6-4, 6-3, and freshman Brittany Borsanyi lost to Alabama’s Alice Tunaru, 6-1, 6-3.

Borsanyi teamed with fellow rookie Caroline Hitimana for an 8-6 loss to Auburn’s Vukadinovic and Schreimann, while Bartlett and Mather fell to Vanderbilt’s Newman and Steinbauer, 9-7.

“We were a little up and down as a group today,” Florida coach Roland Thornqvist said. “It’s clear that this is the first competition of the year. Our effort is magnificent, while we lack in execution a bit.”

Action concludes Sunday with the final round of singles and doubles.
