COLUMBIA, S.C. – The 10th-ranked Florida men’s tennis team concluded its regular season Saturday, sweeping No. 29 South Carolina, 7-0.
The victory marked the fourth sweep this season by coach Andy Jackson’s Gators (16-7 overall, 7-4 SEC) and the first on the road.
The Gators won the doubles point, despite a victory at No. 1 doubles by South Carolina (15-9, 3-8 SEC). Sophomores Jeff Dadamo and Johnny Hamui defeated Gamecocks Pedro Campus and Ivan Cressoni, 8-4, at No. 2 doubles. Freshman Carlos Cueto and sophomore Alex Lacroix earned their 21st straight doubles victory witn an 8-6 victory over South Carolina’s Joseph Veeder and Johannes Pulsfort at No. 3 doubles.
Florida then swept the six singles matches. Freshman Joey Burkhardt won his No. 4 singles match by beating Ivan Machado, 6-1, 6-2. Dadamo downed Cressoni, 6-4, 6-3, for his seventh straight victory at No. 6 singles. Lacroix, ranked No. 30 nationally, then beat Campos at No. 2 singles, 6-3, 6-2, to clinch the match.
Hamui continued the singles sweep with a 6-3, 6-0 victory over Pulsfort at No. 5 singles. Antoine Benneteau beat Jamie Cuellar, 7-6 (6), 6-0 at No. 3 singles. Then at No. 1 singles, No. 22-ranked Cueto beat No. 55 Diego Cubas, 4-6, 6-2, 1-0 (10-6) to complete the Florida sweep.
The Gators travel to Auburn, Ala. for the SEC Championship next Thursday through Sunday.
