With the East Division berth in the Southeastern Conference Championship Game on Dec. 5 in Atlanta’s Georgia Dome clinched, the top-ranked Florida Gators begin the four-game November portion of the schedule Saturday evening at 7:15 against Vanderbilt. ESPN2 has the telecast as Florida attempts to win for the 19th straight time in the series.
GAME 9: VANDERBILT COMMODORES AT No. 1 FLORIDA GATORS
WHEN: Saturday at 7:15 p.m. ET.
WHERE: Ben Hill Griffin Stadium at Florida Field (88,548), Gainesville, Fla.
WEATHER FORECAST: Clear skies, 76 degrees (low 58 degrees), 0 percent precipitation, winds from the ENE at 13 miles per hour.
OVER THE AIRWAVES: ESPN2 (Mark Jones, play-by-play; Bob Davie, color analyst) has the telecast. Gator Radio Network has broadcast (see below for more information and stations) with Mick Hubert, Lee McGriff and Steve Babik.
RECORDS: Vanderbilt is 2-7 overall, 0-5 in the SEC East Division. Florida is 8-0 overall, 6-0 in the SEC East Division.
BRICK HOUSES: Not only will the Commodores be looking to end an 18-game losing streak to the Gators Saturday but they have not won in Gainesville since 1945, the opening game in the series. … Freshman kickoff returner Warren Norman has returned three kickoffs for touchdowns this season. … Vanderbilt is the only school in the SEC playing a 12-game schedule without a week off. … The Commodores have seven true freshmen seeing action and have had 12 first-time starts this season.
GATOR BYTES: The Gators’ 18-game winning streak – the longest in the nation and also in school history – stretches back to the 31-30 loss to Mississippi last season at The Swamp. … It’s the longest in the SEC since Auburn won 20 straight in 1993-94 under coach Terry Bowden. … Florida will be without the services of MLB Brandon Spikes, who is sitting out a one-game suspension for unsportsmanlike conduct against Georgia. … With Spikes out and junior Brandon Hicks unavailable this week, the Gators probably will go with Ryan Stamper in the middle and Dustin Doe on the outside. But coach Urban Meyer indicated that freshman Jon Bostic could see action in the middle, allowing Stamper to play as the weakside linebacker.
MEDICAL UPDATE: According to Florida coach Urban Meyer following Thursday’s practice, Chris Rainey (shoulder) and Deonte Thompson (ribs) both practiced full speed. … Freshman tailback Mike Gillislee (hamstring) also will play. … Defensive linemen Lawrence Marsh (ankle), Jaye Howard (knee) and Justin Trattou (ruptured biceps tenson) all are expected to play.
RANKINGS: Vanderbilt is unranked. Florida is No. 1 in the Bowl Championship Series rankings (Week 3), No. 1 in the Associated Press (media) poll, No. 1 in the USA Today (American Football Coaches Association) poll, No. 1 in the Harris Interactive (BCS) poll and No. 1 in the Legends Coaches poll.
COACHES: Vanderbilt, Bobby Johnson (Clemson, 1973) is 29-63 (.315) in his eighth season at Vanderbilt and is 89-99 (.473) in 16 seasons (with a previous stop at Furman). Florida, Urban Meyer (Cincinnati, 1988) is 52-9 (.852) in his fifth season at Florida and 91-17 (.843) in his ninth season as a head coach (with previous stops at Bowling Green and Utah).
