Jim McElwain had his weekly press conference on Wednesday. He discussed several things, including injuries, continuing LSU talk, and Florida’s struggle with penalties.
Gator Country brings a notebook of what he had to say.
Missouri/LSU Talk
• Spurrier and former players will talk to the team tomorrow to try to get them motivated for homecoming.
• McElwain recruited Missouri quarterback Drew Lock when he was at Colorado State.
• McElwain on LSU: “I’ll go play them anywhere. I don’t get where all this is coming from. The one thing we never do is back down.”
Injuries
• Daniel McMillian practiced today and is probable for the Missouri game.
• Joseph Putu’s ankle is still banged up, but should be able to go.
• CJ Worton didn’t go at practice today.
• Caleb Brantley didn’t go the full practice today. “I don’t know what his deal is,” McElwain said.
• Justus Reed is out.
Offense
• Luke Del Rio will start against Missouri. He and Austin Appleby split first-team reps this week.
• The Gators are looking for improvement on offense this week with Del Rio back.
• Tyrie Cleveland is putting himself in a position to play more. “The more he plays with consistency the more he’ll get opportunities,” said McElwain.
• DeAndre Goolsby is just starting to scratch the surface of how good of a player he can be, according to McElwain.
Penalties
• On penalties: “I’ll tell you what it tells me, tells me we’ve got some selfish guys.”
• “I’m okay with effort penalties. It’s the unforced errors that need to be cut down,” he said.
