Walter Clayton Jr. breaks Florida’s program record for consecutive games with a 3-pointer

Florida Gators guard Walter Clayton Jr. broke Florida’s program record for consecutive games with a three pointer on Wednesday night vs South Carolina.

Trailing 46-35 at the 14-minute mark in the second half, Clayton Jr. buried his first three pointer of the game, extending his active streak to 42 games, passing Michael Frazier II’s record of 41, which was set in the 2014-15 season.

“Number one is confidence, and number two is consistency,” Florida head coach Todd Golden said on Clayton Jr’s. streak. “You know, I think every team we’re playing against is trying to limit Walter’s ability to make threes, and he’s been able to do it.”

The senior has hit a three pointer in all of Florida’s 19 games this season. His last game without a triple came on December 30th, 2023 against Quinnipiac, where Clayton Jr. logged just one three-point attempt across 21 minutes in a blowout victory. That is the only game Clayton Jr. has failed to record a three pointer in a Gators’ uniform. Clayton Jr. has made a three pointer in 54 of his 55 games at Florida, establishing himself as one of the better shooters in program history.

“Walt’s obviously one of the most talented players in America,” Golden said on Clayton Jr. “He does not need much time or space to be able to get those shots up. And, you know, sometimes, just like we learned with Caleb Grill last week, you can highly contest a shot, and it’s still going to go in. Walt’s one of those guys, you know, you might play great defense on him, but great offense is a little better than great defense sometimes.”

On the 2024/25 season, Clayton Jr. is averaging 17.9 points per game while shooting 45.8% from the field and 36.7% from beyond the arch. The 6’3, 195-pound guard is part of one of the best backcourts in the country, which has led Florida to a 16-2 (3-2 SEC) record.
