Ohio guard AJ Brown commits to Florida

Florida’s men’s basketball team landed their second transfer portal commitment of the offseason when Ohio guard AJ Brown pledged to the Gators on Thursday morning. Brown took an official visit to Gainesville on Tuesday.

“Committed to the Swamp,” Brown’s agency wrote on social media.

Brown, a 6’4, 210-pound guard with two years of eligibility remaining, averaged 13.2 points, 3.2 rebounds, and 1.1 assists during his 2024/25 campaign. He’s also the brother of current Florida guard Isaiah Brown, a rising sophomore who appeared in 19 games last season.

The first thing that stands out about Brown’s game is his offensive efficiency having shot 47.1% from the field and 38.8% from three-point range last season. Brown is most effective off the catch where he hit 41% of his three-point attempts, according to Gator Country’s own Eric Fawcett. Brown’s success from beyond the arc last season wasn’t a fluke either as he’s a career 37.1% three-point shooter, a statistic that clearly had Todd Golden’s attention.

The Orlanda, Florida native posted an offensive rating of 119.4, ranking 268th in the country last season according to KenPom. Brown is also a good free throw shooter, making 82 of 100 attempts last year. Brown’s offensive efficiency from two, three, and the free throw line allowed him to post a true shooting percentage of 61.9, the 104th highest mark in the country last season.

Brown should serve as an off the ball, complementary piece to the Gators next season.

With Denzel Aberdeen’s recent departure to Kentucky, the Gators are tasked with replacing four of their top six most used players from their National Championship season. Florida has already received a signature from Princeton guard Xaivian Lee, who committed to the program last Wednesday. The Gators are still talking to a number of guards in the portal including Cal’s Andrej Stojakovic, Gravelines-Dunkerque’s Evan Boisdur, and Australian Ben Henshall in an effort to rebuild the roster ahead of the 2025/26 season.
