Florida sophomore Kenny Boynton was named to the prestigious John R. Wooden Award preseason watch list, announced today by the Los Angeles Athletic Club.
The list is made up of 50 student-athletes who, based on last year’s individual performance and team records, are the early frontrunners for college basketball’s most impressive honor.
Boynton led UF in scoring as a freshman, averaging 14.0 points en route to a spot on the SEC All-Freshman Team. He also knocked down 72 3-pointers, the second-most ever by a UF freshman. The dynamic guard tied a Florida NCAA Tournament record with a 27-point performance against BYU in the NCAA Tournament.
In December, the Wooden Award Committee will release the midseason list, followed in March by the National Ballot, consisting of approximately 20 top players who have proven that they are also making progress toward graduation and maintaining a cumulative 2.0 GPA.
The Wooden Award All-American Team will be announced the week of the “Elite Eight” round during the NCAA Tournament.
The 35th annual Wooden Award ceremony will take place the weekend of April 8-10, 2011.
