Southern Mississippi draws Texas in CWS

Southern Mississippi, which rallied from a 6-1 deficit to beat Florida 7-6 Sunday and win the Gainesville Super Regional, will play top-seeded Texas when the College World Series begins this weekend at Rosenblatt Stadium in Omaha, Neb.

he Golden Eagles (40-24) will begin their first CWS Sunday evening at 7 p.m. against the Longhorns (46-14-1) in the last opening-round game of the double-elimination tournament. Texas is playing in its 33rd College World Series.

The College World Series begins Saturday with a pair of games involving Florida’s Southeastern Conference rivals, Arkansas and Louisiana State.

The Razorbacks (39-22), who swept the Tallahassee Super Regional from Florida State, open the CWS at 2 p.m. against No. 2 seed Cal State Fullerton (47-14), which swept its own Super Regional from Louisville.

Then Louisiana State (51-16), the No. 3 seed at the start of the 64-team tournament, will play Virginia (48-13-1) of the Atlantic Coast Conference. The Cavaliers, who are making their first CWS appearance, and Tigers meet in Saturday’s 7 p.m. game.

In Sunday’s opening game, Arizona State (49-12) and North Carolina (47-16), which both won Super Regionals at home, square off at 2 p.m. followed by Southern Miss and Texas.

Texas was the last of the eight teams to claim a berth in Omaha, winning the third game of the Austin Super Regional from Mountain West Conference champion Texas Christian, 5-2, Monday night.

The Longhorns, who will be seeking their sixth national title, never trailed as freshman Taylor Jungmann allowed just two hits over six innings and his teammates staked him to a 3-0 lead after the first inning against Tyler Lockwood, who took the loss for TCU (40-18).

Brandon Belt had an RBI triple and Kevin Keyes hit a solo home run in the first inning and then scored two more runs in the fourth when Keyes doubled and scored on Cameron Rupp’s double.

Jungmann struck out five and walked one for his eighth victory before being replaced by Austin Wood in the bottom of the seventh with a 5-0 lead. Wood, who pitched 12.1 scoreless innings in relief during Texas’ 25-inning 3-2 victory over Boston College in the Austin Regional, surrendered two runs before Chance Ruffin got the final two outs.
