Hogtied in Hoover

HOOVER, Ala. — Plagued by errors the first half of the season, defense became one of Florida’s strongest assets in the second half of the Southeastern Conference regular season. But during Wednesday’s opening game of the SEC Tournament at Regions Park, errors once again bit the Gators — hard.

The No. 9 Gators, seeded No. 2 in the tournament after winning the SEC East Division, made four errors, as many as they had hits, dropping an 8-5 decision to seventh-seeded Arkansas. The loss sends Florida (38-19) into an elimination game Thursday morning at 11 ET against third-seeded Mississippi (40-16), which lost the second game of the tournament to sixth-seeded Georgia, 6-3. The Bulldogs (36-20) and Razorbacks (33-20) meet in Thursday’s first evening game at 6 p.m. ET.

“We didn’t catch the ball as well as we had been,” Florida’s second-year head coach Kevin O’Sullivan said. “Today it just boiled down to we did not make the plays defensively. That’s the bottom line.”

Seven of the eight runs the Gators allowed were unearned, with the only Arkansas earned run coming on a solo home run by Zack Cox in the top of the ninth inning. Cox went 3-for-4 to lead the Razorbacks’ 11-hit attack against five Florida pitchers.

Florida’s senior left-hander Stephen Locke (4-2) started but lasted just 3.2 innings, allowing eight hits and six unearned runs.

“That doesn’t seem to happen too much,” Locke said. “Basically it boils down to me not making the pitches for the team.”

Arkansas scored one run in the second inning on an RBI groundout by Bo Bigham that scored Cox, who had doubled to lead off the inning.

The Gators responded with two runs in the third inning. Back-to-back walks by Arkansas starter Dallas Keuchel to Mike Mooney and Avery Barnes started the inning, and they moved up a base each after Jonathan Pigott laid down a perfect sacrifice bunt.

Co-SEC Freshman of the Year Preston Tucker followed by smoking a ground ball to second baseman Bigham, who fielded it but could not get the ball out of his glove. That scored Mooney and moved Barnes to third from where he scored on Josh Adams’ groundout that gave Florida an early 2-1 lead.

But Arkansas took the momentum right back in the top of the fourth.

With one out, Cox singled to right field. Brett Eibner hit a ground ball to first base, but Tucker’s throw pulled Mike Mooney off the base and both runners were safe. After Bigham struck out, Tom Hauskey stroked a pinch-hit single into center that scored Cox. Eibner went to third on the play and Hauskey went to second base on the throw.

Chase Leavitt followed with a single to left field that scored Eibner and moved Hauskey to third. After Leavitt went to second on a wild pitch, Ben Tschepikow walked to load the bases. Travis Sample then doubled down the left-field line, scoring Leavitt and Hauskey, while Tschepikow scored on a throwing error by Florida left fielder Avery Barnes.

“We had some big two-out hits and put together a big inning,” Arkansas coach Dave Van Horn said.

Pinch-hitting Hauskey for catcher Ryan Cisterna was something that Van Horn toyed with and warned his junior catcher about in case Arkansas needed a clutch hit.

“I told Thomas a couple innings earlier that if we had an opportunity to pinch-hit him for Ryan, whether it was in the third inning, fifth inning, seventh inning or whenever, be ready,” Van Horn said. “He was ready to roll (that inning). It ended up being the right play. Give credit to Thomas. Pinch-hitting is tough. The first pitch he swung over a breaking ball by about six inches. He extended the inning and got us to the top of the order where we got another big hit.”

Florida responded with three runs in the bottom of the fourth inning, knocking out Keuchel in the process. A passed ball scored Matt den Dekker from third with the bases loaded, and Tucker followed with a single up the middle to score two runs. The normally in-control Keuchel, who went 3.2 innings, walked six batters and surrendered just two hits with his five runs, four of which were earned.

“I don’t know if he’s walked more than three all season,” Van Horn said.

The Gators thought they were doing themselves a favor by knocking Keuchel out, but Arkansas reliever Mike Bolsinger made them think otherwise. He allowed only one hit, and it was the 2-RBI single by Tucker in the fourth inning. He completed 4.1 innings, walked two and struck out five to earn the victory and even his record at 4-4. Stephen Richards came on in the ninth, walked one and allowed one hit but got his ninth save.

“I think the game boiled down to Bolsinger coming in and doing a nice job to hold the game right there,” O’Sullivan said.

The only issue Bolsinger had was a leadoff walk to Mooney in the bottom of the ninth. With Florida down 8-5 in the ninth inning, they put together their patented come back.

After Mooney’s walk, Barnes lined a single off closer Stephen Richards shoulder for an infield single. Pigott then hit a line drive that seem destined for left field, but Cox dove to snare it and threw Pigott out at first base. Tucker walked to load the bases, which brought Adams to the plate as the winning run. The sophomore grounded into a double play to end the game.

“Once again our guys battled until the end,” O’Sullivan said. “That’s been kind of our M.O. all year.”

Despite the loss, O’Sullivan and his team have not changed their focus. They remain confident in their ability to win the tournament, but it’s difficult not to admit that the road just got a lot tougher, considering they know have to go through the losers’ bracket, facing elimination with each game.

And it isn’t any easier that their first opponent will be Mississippi, which took two of three games from the Gators in mid-April at McKethan Stadium.

“We’re looking to win this thing,” O’Sullivan said. “That’s why we’re here. I wouldn’t expect us to come up here for anything less than to win every game possible.”

The one issue teams usually have with a conference tournament is pitching depth, but that is one thing Florida has in abundance.

“The one thing we’ll tell the team is we have enough pitching depth to work our way through this tournament,” O’Sullivan said.

First to the mound will be freshman right-hander Anthony DeSclafani (5-3, 4.74 ERA).
