Season high seven sacks leads Gators past Tigers

The Florida Gators snapped a five-game losing streak vs LSU on Saturday evening, defeating the Tigers 27-16 behind a season-high seven sacks from Florida’s defense and a monster game from senior receiver Elijhah Badger. The victory also ended Florida’s eight game losing streak against top 25 teams. Florida improves to 5-5 (3-4 SEC) on the 2024 season.

It was a unique game in Gainesville as LSU outgained Florida 382-339, out snapped Florida 92-43, and dominated the time of possession by over 23 minutes. The Gators struggled to get off the field on defense, allowing 13 of 24 conversions on 3rd down and 2 of 4 on 4th downs. Despite nearly two games worth of snaps in 60 minutes, Florida’s defense continued to fight, holding LSU to a trio of field goals after their only touchdown of the game in the second quarter. Florida sacked LSU QB Garrett Nussmeier seven times in the contest, a monstrous effort against an offensive line that had allowed just six sacks through nine games, the 4th least in the country entering week 12.

Junior linebacker Shemar James led Florida in tackles (11), sacks (2), and pass break ups (2).

DJ Lagway wasn’t 100% healthy after suffering a hamstring injury two weeks ago against Georgia. The freshman quarterback’s mobility was limited in the pocket, which took a chunk out of Florida’s playbook and affected his mechanics at times. This didn’t stop Lagway from creating explosive pass plays with his arm strength that changed the outcome of the game.

With the game tied at 13 in the 4th quarter, Lagway stepped up in the pocket and delivered a 36 yard off-platform strike to senior WR Elijhah Badger, setting up a one-yard TD run from Ja’Kobi Jackson to take the lead.

It wasn’t the perfect game from Lagway, but he came up with big time plays when his team needed him most.

Billy Napier said it best postgame.

“God bless that young man.”

57.9% of Lagway’s 226 passing yards went to Badger, who hauled in six receptions for 136 yards and a touchdown. Badger continues to serve as Lagway’s go-to receiver and will likely lead the country in yards per catch after week 12.

With Lagway limited, Florida had to play well around him. The Gators’ offensive line didn’t allow a sack and allowed just one tackle for loss. Florida averaged 6.6 yards per carry.

After holding LSU to their third FG of the game, true freshman running back Jadan Baugh ripped a career long 55-yard TD tun to seal Florida’s victory over LSU.

The Gators will take on No.11 Ole Miss next week inside The Swamp, which will surely be another electric atmosphere as Florida searches for bowl eligibility.
