The Florida Gators coaching staff hosted the second annual Grill in the Ville cookout event and a lot of prospects were on campus for the event.
Quarterback commit DJ Lagway (6-2, 225, Willis, TX. High) was on campus and got to meet some of the newest commits as he continues to help build this 2024 class for the Gators.
“It went amazing, just really getting to meet some of the commits,” Lagway said on his visit to Florida on Saturday. “It was my first time actually meeting some of them. It was great energy and a great connection with everybody. I’m just excited to continue to build this class.”
Lagway was able to spend a lot of time around the coaching staff and he even had a little competition with his future position coach.
“Coach [Ryan] O’Hara was dancing,” Lagway said on seeing the coaches in a more laid-back atmosphere. “We had a little TikTok battle thing. His moves were alright.”
17 of the Gators commits were on campus and Lagway believes it’s a group that’s well connected and gets along well with each other.
“We’re real close, I feel like,” he said on the connection between all of the commits. “Great connection, great laughter, we’re always joking with each other. I feel like we’ve known each other forever.”
Lagway has been a big key in recruiting a lot of guys to Florida and he says that the Gators are being patient with this class and trying to get the right players.
“I feel like it has been very strategic, we’ve had a lot of kids try to commit that we aren’t taking,” he said on how he thinks the class is shaping out. “Just because we don’t have that many commits on the offensive side of the ball doesn’t mean anything. We’re trying to get the right guys, we have a lot of kids in the 2023 receiver class. We’re just trying to get pieces to fit.”
The Gators currently have three receivers committed in the class and Lagway likes what they bring to the table as well as the Gators tight end commit.
“I’ve watched film on them, I feel like we have some speed, speed kills,” Lagway said on the receivers in this year’s class. “I just have to get the ball in their hands and let them do their thing and we have the tight end Amir Jackson who’s an absolute dog. I just can’t wait to get on the field with those guys.”
Napier and the coaching staff are hoping for a great year on the field this fall but Lagway says this class will stick together even if things don’t go Florida’s way.
“Everybody already knows the mindset if it doesn’t go great, we have to be ones to come in here and change it,” he said on if he thinks the class can stick together if the season doesn’t go Florida’s way this year. “That has been the plan since day one and everybody is on board and 100 percent.”
While on campus on Saturday, Lagway spent a lot of time with defensive back target Wardell Mack and he thinks the Gators have a shot at landing his signature.
“I feel like we have a real good chance,” Lagway said on Florida’s chance with Wardell Mack. “I know it’s coming down to Florida and LSU but I feel like we have a really good chance. I basically told him to choose what’s best for him and to talk to God about it. Let God lead you in that decision.”
