Last weekend, the Florida Gators picked up a big receiver commitment, but they also hosted another top receiver target on campus.
Receiver Davian Groce (6-1, 190, Frisco, TX., Lone Star) was on campus and enjoyed the atmosphere around the program.
“That was the biggest thing for me, just the team and the morale,” Groce said of his visit to Florida. “It was real positive, this is the best team morale that I’ve been around and seen.”
This was the first time for Groce to visit Gainesville, and meeting with receivers coach Billy Gonzales was a big deal to him.
“It for sure locked me in with them for a while,” he said on what this visit did for Florida’s chances with him. “Being able to converse with them and being able to talk about the offense. Coach Billy G, he knows exactly what he’s talking about, he talks about the knowledge of football, the knowledge of getting people to the next level. I mean he’s as high as it gets, he’s the most knowledgeable. So, yeah, they’re for sure high on my list.”
Heading into the visit, Groce didn’t know what to expect from Florida, but he was surprised by how well the visit went.
“Definitely, it surprised me a lot,” Groce said on if the visit surprised him at all. “I wasn’t expecting as much love as I got, I mean obviously Florida, you know they win a lot of games and do a lot of great things when it comes to the football field, but you know just getting the inside of it was very big. Especially how great the team was meshing; it was crazy to me. I’ve never seen something like that before in my life from all of the schools that I’ve been to. I’ve just never seen a team that’s so together.”
Gonzales made sure that Groce knew he was wanted in Gainesville, and the receiver knows that Gonzales can help him reach the next level.
“I just get the vibe, the energy from him that he really wanted me to come,” Groce said on feeling wanted by Florida. “Just the fact that that I felt really wanted and Coach Billy G, his energy, everything that he’s about when it comes to coaching. I mean like I said before he’s been doing this for a long and he’s had a lot of greatness, a lot of great thing and coached a lot of great guy. My favorite player Odell Beckham, he urged me come.”
After the visit, Groce says the Gators are in his top group of schools as he finishes up official visits before announcing in July.
“They definitely stand in the top three for sure,” he said on where Florida stands for him. “I think all the visits I’m taking right now would be my top five or final four, with Oklahoma, Baylor, Houston and [Florida]. They’re definitely in the mix of where I want to go for sure.”
