Florida Gators lacrosse clinches Big 12 Championship

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – The fourth-ranked Florida lacrosse team (15-2, 5-0 Big 12) defeated Arizona State (10-7, 3-2 Big 12) on Senior Day by a final of 17-5, clinching the Big 12 Regular Season Championship. It is Florida’s 13th regular season title of all-time.

The Gators fell behind 1-0 early, but answered with 10 consecutive goals to create separation. Florida led by as many as 13 goals.

Eight different Gators found the back of the net, led by four from Clark Hamilton, all off of free-position shots. Hamilton went four-of-five from the eight-meter mark, tying the program record for most eight-meter goals in a game.

Kaitlyn Davies and Jordan Basso each scored three goals, along with two from Frannie Hahn and Gianna Monaco. Gabby Greene, Gabbi Koury and Jenny Markey each totaled one.

UF had seven assists compared to one from the Sun Devils, as Hahn led the way with four assists. Hamilton, Basso and Davies each dished out one.

Elyse Finnelle recorded 10 saves on the day, improving to 10-0 in the cage this season. Ashley Dyer tied a career high of four ground balls.

How It Happened

First Quarter

*   Arizona State struck first with 12:35 to play, before the Gators scored six unanswered goals to end the quarter. Greene scored first on an unassisted goal, before Hamilton connected on back-to-back free-position shots to give Florida a 3-1 lead with 5:28 to play.
*   Davies connected on a free-position woman-up goal, before scoring another via a Frannie Hahn assist to make it 5-1 at the 1:08 point. Hahn scored with 18 seconds to play off an assist from Davies to give Florida a 6-1 lead after one.
Second Quarter

*   Florida scored four more goals in the first 7:00 of the second. First, off a caused turnover on the ride, Basso scored off an assist from Hamilton to make it 7-1.
*   Monaco scored 48 seconds later via an assist from Frannie Hahn, before the duo connected again at the 8:37 point to take a 9-1 advantage.
*   Basso concluded the run with 8:00 to play, scoring a behind-the-back goal off the pass from Hahn, to go up 10-1.
*   Arizona State got one back, but Hamilton scored another eight-meter goal with 48 seconds left, to take an 11-2 lead heading into the break.
Third Quarter

*   The Sun Devils scored two goals to start the frame, getting the lead down to 11-4 with 11:16 to play. Arizona State had a chance to cut the deficit to six, but Lydia Oldknow had a free-position shot saved by Finnelle, which led to Koury scoring on the next possession. Florida led 12-4 with 8:07 remaining.
*   Markey connected on a goal with 7:16 to play off the feed from Basso, as UF took a 13-4 lead heading into the fourth.
Fourth Quarter

*   The Gators scored the first four goals of the fourth quarter, concluding a 6-0 run overall.
*   Hamilton scored her fourth eight-meter goal of the game, before Davies scored her third of the day to put Florida up 15-4.
*   Basso and Hahn concluded the scoring for the Gators, taking their largest lead of the game at 17-4 with 7:00 to play.
*   Arizona State scored a goal late, as Florida won 17-5.

*   The Gators move to 4-0 all-time against Arizona State and 141-24 at Donald R. Dizney Stadium
*   The Gators clinched the outright Big 12 Regular Season Title, their 13th Regular Season Championship
