Five Aggies to watch vs Florida

Gator Country gives you five Texas A&M Aggies to watch in week three vs Florida.

RB Le’Veon Moss #8

The Aggies have run the ball on 58% of their offensive plays through two games against Notre Dame and McNeese State. While Texas A&M will likely utilize three running backs in the game, junior running back Le’Veon Moss will take the majority of snaps. Through two games, Moss has run the ball 29 times for 154 yards and three touchdowns.

In nine games played last year, Moss led the Aggies in average rushing yards per game (53.8) and was second in total yards rushed (484) and rushing touchdowns (5).

The 6’0, 215 pound running back hasn’t had many opportunities to create explosive plays as the Aggies’ offensive line hasn’t given him much running room, but the Louisiana native has the ability to run through contact and create broken tackles. Moss’s broken tackle rate of 41.38 is the 4th best in the SEC.

Moss has excellent burst through the line of scrimmage which stems from his background in track.

QB Conner Weigman #15

Texas A&M’s Conner Weigman was one of the more highly regarded quarterbacks entering the 2024 season. In four games played last season, Weigman graded as the No.2 QB in the FBS behind Heisman Trophy Winner Jayden Daniels.

The start of 2024 hasn’t been kind to the 6’3, 220-pound signal caller, who has completed just 23 of 44 passes (52.2%) for 225 yards and two touchdowns across two games. Weigman struggled connecting with open receivers in week one vs Notre Dame, managing only 12 completions for 100 yards on 30 attempts. Weigman also tossed two interceptions in this game.

Part of Weigman’s issues has been the talent surrounding him. The loss of Evan Stewart in the transfer portal was costly for the Aggies’ offense. Weigman has not been decisive with the football with a clean pocket, which has led to poor decisions and inaccurate passes.

Weigman has above average arm strength with the mobility to move up in the pocket and take off for significant gains. Weigman moves well vertically but does not have the athleticism to roam around in the pocket like we saw with Miami’s Cam Ward.

DE Nic Scourton #11

Nic Scourton could be the best player on Texas A&M’s roster. The Purdue transfer was the No.1 edge rusher in the portal this offseason and ranked No.8 overall, according to 247 Sports. Scourton projects as a first-round pick in the majority of NFL mock drafts and is listed as high as a top five pick.

The 6’4, 285-pound defensive lineman has lined up primarily outside of the tackle for Texas A&M but has the flexibility to play on the interior as well.

In 2023, Scourton led the Big Ten and ranked eighth in the nation with 10.0 sacks, while totaling 50 tackles, 15.0 tackles for loss and one forced fumble to earn Second Team All-Big Ten recognition. Scourton posted an impressive ‘win rate’ of 30.6% on true pass sets in 2023.

In week one vs Notre Dame, Scourton totaled three tackles, 1.5 tackles for loss, and one sack.

Scourton is a bigger-bodied edge rusher that has the strength to overpower his opponents in pass rush scenarios and set the edge in the run game.

DE Shemar Stewart #4

Junior defensive end Shemar Stewart is another dominant player along Texas A&M’s defensive line. The 6’6, 290-pound edge rusher leads the Aggies in pressures with six across two games, according to Pro Football Focus. Stewart grades as Texas A&M’s 3rd best defender amongst players with more than 20 snaps. Like Scourton, Stewart plays primarily outside of the tackle but has the size to play on the interior if needed.

The former five star found immediate playing time as a true freshman in 2022, where he logged six starts for the Aggies. Stewart is a lengthy, athletic defensive lineman that can make a positive impact in run defense and in pass rush. Stewart’s current ‘win rate’ of 44.4% is the highest on the Aggies through two games.

WR Cyrus Allen #6

After the loss of former five-star receiver Evan Stewart in the transfer portal, the Aggies needed to find weapons at wide receiver. Texas A&M added Louisiana Tech transfer Cyrus Allen, who has progressed nicely in his three-year collegiate career. Allen made an immediate impact as a true freshman in 2022, hauling in 22 catches for 500 yards and four touchdowns, an average of 22.7 yards per catch, which ranked 2nd in the Nation. Allen ranked sixth nationally among all true freshmen in receiving yards while leading FBS freshmen with 10 plays over 30 yards.

In 2023, Allen set a career high 778 receiving yards on 48 catches while hauling in four touchdowns.

Through two games in 2024, Allen leads the Aggies in both receptions (7) and yards (100).

The 6’0, 178-pound receiver has the ability to get behind opposing defenses and has a knack for finding open space in coverage.
