Last Saturday afternoon the south endzone for the Florida Gators had several big name 2018 prospects in it as they were on unofficial visits.
One of those guys was 2018 receiver Warren Thompson (6-4, 185, Seffner, FL. Armwood) who was on campus for the second straight weekend.
“I loved the visit, it was a great atmosphere,” Thompson said. “I liked the offense they ran, they run the pro-style offense. I just want to get up here more often to keep seeing things and getting more comfortable up here.”
Thompson payed close attention to the Gators offense and in particular to the Florida passing game.
“Antonio Callaway and Brandon Powell compliment each other well,” he said of Florida’s passing game. “They have two true freshmen playing and I know Coach [Kerry] Dixon is big on playing freshmen. They throw the ball around a lot too so I was impressed.”
Receivers coach Kerry Dixon has been leading the charge in Thompson’s recruitment and pushing one big message to him.
“Coach Dixon tells me to commit because I belong in the pro-style offense,” Thompson said of Dixon’s message to him. “He said that I can play early at Florida and that I won’t have to wait to get play up here. He says that he thinks that I can play the X receiver.”
September first has rolled around so coaches can now text 2018 players and head coach Jim McElwain is doing just that with Thompson.
“Coach Mac text messages me often now that he can,” Thompson said. “He just checks on me and see how I’m doing and everything. Nothing about football, usually just life.
A few months ago Thompson said the Gators and Miami were his top two schools but he has now backed off of that statement.
“Right now, I’m trying to give everyone an equal chance,” Thompson said of leaders. “I like Florida though and they’re high on my list. I’m going to be back for the North Texas game and the LSU game.”
INSIDERS TAKE: Thompson is one of the top receivers in the state for next year and right now it seems like Florida and Miami are the top two schools for him. Thompson will take a lot of visits before announcing a decision.
