I never want to say that one prospect is more important than another, but finding a quarterback for the class of 2016 is a must for the Florida Gators and possibly the most important need in this class.
Good news for Florida is that top quarterback target Dillon Sterling-Cole (6-2, 185, Houston, TX Westfield) has officially set up plans to visit Gainesville for an unofficial visit.
“I’m going to be on campus at Florida on Tuesday for a visit,” he said. “Tyrie [Cleveland] and I are coming together. I’m just coming for the visit but Tyrie is planning on working out for the coaches.”
Head coach Jim McElwain would probably be the first to tell you that he needs a quarterback in this class and he taken charge of Sterling-Cole’s commitment.
“I talk to Coach McElwain a lot and it has been going great,” Sterling-Cole said. “It has been fun getting a chance to know Coach Mac. He’s a great guy and he’s really straight forward with you. It has been a lot of fun to hear what the head coach thinks about you and how bad they want you. It’s really big for me.”
Last month offensive coordinator Doug Nussmeier visited the Texas quarterback several times and the two have kept in touch with Nussmeier always keeping the same message to Sterling-Cole.
“Coach Nussmeier tells me that I fit their system and what they’re trying to do out there great,” he said. “He said that I can really help them out and help them open up their playbook a lot.”
Florida has created some buzz across the country with the receivers they have committed to them, and Sterling-Cole is one prospect that has taken notice of that.
“It’s really big to see how good their receivers class is going,” Sterling-Cole said. “Especially with the possibility of having another big receiver coming in. It’s just making Florida more of a possibility for me.”
One thing about this coaching staff that is noticeable is how hard they work and that is showing up in Sterling-Cole’s recruitment.
“I say that Florida is recruiting me the hardest right now,” Sterling-Cole said. “I have come to the decision that I’m not going to graduate early so I’m going to wait to make a decision until either the beginning of the season or during the season.”
INSIDERS TAKE: Florida needs to have a good visit with Sterling-Cole next week, but the Gators have positioned themselves really well for the Texas quarterback so far. Also one more important piece of information is that Sterling-Cole says that Florida is his last planned visit of the summer.
Kid need to go ahead and commit and start being a leader and recruiting other STUDS to come play at UF with him. Waiting does the team no good. Be a leader…. Step up and commit – then recruit.
