The No. 25 Florida women’s golf team is in 17th place at the end of the first round of the inaugural Pac-10/SEC Challenge. The Gators recorded a team score of 309 (+25) at the par-71, 6,103-yard Stanford Golf Course in Palo Alto, Calif.
“It really was not a very good day,” Florida coach Jan Dowling said. “We made some bogeys on par 5s and we made some doubles and triples (bogeys) and those really hurt us.”
The course was demanding the entire day as only 21 players managed to finish even-par or better and every team in the field was over par in the first round.
“The rough is pretty deep and you have to hit a lot of fairways,” Dowling said. “We have to take our medicine when we get in trouble and not compound our mistakes because it is a tough golf course.”
Junior Evan Jensen overcame a bogey-double bogey-bogey finish on the front nine to shoot one-under on the back for a 2-over 73 that left her tied for 29th.
Junior Marika Lendl completed her first 18 holes with four-over 75, placing her in a tie for 48th. Sophomore Mia Piccio recorded a 9-over 80 and was tied for 85th. Junior Andrea Watts shot an 81 and sophomore Isabelle Lendl carded an 18-over 89.
