Florida junior Joanna Mather and sophomore Brittany Borsanyi won their singles matches to highlight action on the first day of the Gator Fall Classic at the Linder Stadium/Ring Tennis Complex Friday.
Mather and sophomore Caroline Hitimana combined for an 8-3 victory against FIU’s Lisa Johnson and Liset Brito in the only Gator doubles match played.
“I thought this was a pretty good first day,” Florida associate head coach Dave Balogh said. “We worked on some things in doubles, in particular with attacking and putting pressure on them and I thought Jo and Caroline did a good job with those things.”
Mather then topped Florida State’s Federica Suess, 6-1, 6-1, to capture her 50th college singles victory. Borsanyi earned a 6-3, 6-2 triumph versus FSU’s Manon Veldman.
“Joanna kept things simple in her match and was very business-like in her win,” Balogh said. “Brittany didn’t give away free points and that was a bright side.”
Hitimana had a tough singles outing, dropping a 6-3, 6-2 decision to South Florida’s Janette Bejlkova.
The event continues Saturday at 9 a.m. and admission is free. Doubles matches begin the day, followed by singles play.
