Florida sophomore Sekou Bangoura Jr. reached the semifinals of the USTA/ITA Men’s Southeast Regional Championships at the Linder Stadium/Ring Tennis Complex before falling to third-seeded Clint Bowles of Florida State.
Bangoura posted an impressive 7-5, 7-5 quarterfinal victory over Georgia Tech’s Guillermo Gomez, the tournament’s No. 1 seed and the fourth-ranked player nationally. But Bowles, the nation’s No. 43rd-ranked player, ousted Bangoura, 6-3, 6-2.
“I thought overall we had a good showing this weekend,” Florida coach Andy Jackson said. “It was a great run by Sekou to make it into the semifinals, and now we have to get back to work and continue preparing for the spring.”
Senior Alexandre Lacroix already is qualified for November’s USTA/ITA National Collegiate Indoor Championships at the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing, N.Y., and did not compete in the singles draw this weekend.
Florida’s Bob van Overbeek and Andrew Butz both earned a quarterfinal appearance, as well, but were defeated in their respective matches.
