Head coach Amanda Butler won’t miss the Florida women’s basketball season, but as her flag football season is concerned, it’s over.
Butler doesn’t expect to miss much time getting her basketball team ready for the season after undergoing successful surgery Monday morning to repair her left Achilles tendon which ruptured during an on-campus flag football game Saturday.
Butler, who was quarterbacking her then undefeated team in The Swamp Bowl, an on-campus event, suffered the injury when she dropped back to pass, much like Vinny Testaverde once ruptured his Achilles tendon while playing for the New York Jets. The procedure was performed by team physician and orthopaedist Dr. Mike Moser at the Orthopaedics and Sports Medicine Institute in Gainesville.
An MRI on Sunday morning revealed the extent of Butler’s injury and surgery was planned for Monday. Butler missed her usual Monday press conference appearance (assistant coach Gardner took her place), but she was at practice Sunday night between 5:30 and 8 p.m. in order to help the Backcourt Club’s annual membership drive.
The Gators do not practice Tuesday. Butler, who was released from OSMI Monday evening, will spend the day resting at home but plans to be back to work on Wednesday, including attending the afternoon practice.
