Florida remains solid No. 1 in BCS and polls

The top eight teams kept their positions in the fifth week of the Bowl Championship Series rankings released Sunday.

After winning its 20th straight game over two seasons Saturday with its 24-14 triumph at South Carolina, Florida remained a solid No. 1, thanks to its No. 1 rankings in the USA Today/American Football Coaches Association and Harris Interactive polls and its No. 1 placing in an average of six computer rankings.

Alabama remained ahead of Texas in the second spot. The Crimson Tide were ranked No. 3 in both the Harris and USA Today polls but averaged No. 2 in the computer rankings. Texas, ranked No. 2 in both the Harris and USA Today polls, was ranked No. 4 in the computer rankings.

Florida and Alabama will play each other in the SEC Championship Game Dec. 5 in Atlanta’s Georgia Dome. The winner is expected to be in the Citi BCS National Championship Game on Jan. 7, 2010 at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, Calif., likely against Texas, which is likely headed for a showdown with either Nebraska or Kansas State in the Big 12 Championship Game on Dec. 5, provided the Longhorns win their final Big 12 games against Kansas and Texas A&M.

Texas Christian of the Mountain West Conference was a solid fourth, with Cincinnati of the Big East and Boise State of the Western Athletic Conference fifth and sixth, respectively. The top six teams all have 10-0 records.

Georgia Tech, which is 10-1 and headed to the ACC Championship Game on Dec. 5, is seventh, ahead of two-loss Louisiana State (which lost to Florida and Alabama). Pittsburgh of the Big East moved from 12th to ninth on the basis of its 27-22 victory over Notre Dame that left the Panthers 9-1 with games against West Virginia and Cincinnati remaining.

Ohio State, which beat Iowa 27-24 to clinch the Big Ten’s Rose Bowl berth, moved from 11th to 10th. The Buckeyes are 9-2 heading to Ann Arbor for their annual showdown against Michigan.

The Gators, however, no longer are No. 1 in one poll – the Legends Poll of retired college football coaches. Though Florida received one more first-place ballot than Alabama (7-6), the 17 Hall of Fame coaches voting had the Crimson Tide with 410 points, one point ahead of Florida and five points ahead of Texas, which received the other four first-place votes.

Former coaches Frank Broyles (Arkansas), Fisher DeBerry (Air Force), Vince Dooley (Georgia), Dick MacPherson (Syracuse), Bill Mallory (Indiana), John Robinson (Southern California) and George Welsh (Navy-Virginia) put the Gators at the top of their ballots.

John Ralston (Stanford), R.C. Slocum (Texas A&M), Gene Stallings (Texas A&M-Alabama), Pat Dye (Auburn), Don James (Washington) and Frank Kush (Arizona State) threw their support behind Alabama.

LaVell Edwards (Brigham Young), Don Nehlen (West Virginia), John Cooper (Tulsa-Arizona State-Ohio State) and Terry Donahue (UCLA) backed Texas.
