The numbers might not agree but Florida offensive coordinator Dan Mullen says quarterback Tim Tebow is actually having a better season in 2008 than he had last year when he became the first sophomore in history to win the Heisman Trophy. Mullen says record-setting stats are great to have but there is only one that matters.

“The most important one [stat] is wins and losses,” said Mullen earlier in the week. “That’s number one. To this point compared to where we were last year he is having a better year.”

Last year Tebow threw for 3,286 yards and 32 touchdowns while rushing for 895 yards and 23 touchdowns. He was the first quarterback in NCAA history to record more than 20 touchdown passes and 20 rushing touchdowns in the same season.

It was the numbers that got Tebow the Heisman Trophy but his won-lost record as a quarterback was 9-4.

Through eight games in 2008, Tebow has a 7-1 record. The Gators are ranked fourth nationally and they can clinch the SEC East Division championship Saturday night with a win over Vanderbilt (8 p.m., Vanderbilt Stadium, ESPN2). He has passed for 1,569 yards and 14 touchdowns and he has rushed for 266 yards and eight touchdowns.

Back in January of 1969, the late, great Jack Hairston, then the sports editor of the Jacksonville Journal, called me on the phone one night and asked me if I wanted to work for him. I said yes. The entire interview took 30 seconds. It's my experience that whenever the interview lasts 30 seconds or less, I get the job. In the 48 years that I've been writing and getting paid for it, I've covered Super Bowls, World Series, NCAA basketball championships, BCS championship games, heavyweight title fights and what seems like thousands of college football, baseball and basketball games. I'm a columnist and special assignments editor for Gator Country once again, writing about the only team that ever mattered to me, the Florida Gators.
