Summer baseball leagues are mostly wrapped up around the country, so it’s time to check in and see how the Florida Gators performed at their various summer assignments.
RHP Aidan King – USA Collegiate National Team
Florida ace Aidan King was one of three Gator pitchers to play for the USA Collegiate National Team this summer. Across CNT Training Camp and the World Collegiate Baseball Championship, King tossed eight innings of two-run ball, allowing six hits and one walk while striking out 14 batters. His two runs allowed were both unearned, as King finished the summer with a 0.00 ERA, a 0.87 WHIP and 15.75 strikeouts per nine innings.
RHP Jackson Barberi – USA Collegiate National Team
Joining King on the USA Collegiate National Team this summer, Jackson Barberi made four appearances between CNT Training Camp and the World Collegiate Baseball Championship, allowing just one earned run, one hit and one walk across 4.2 innings. Barberi struck out five batters and posted a 0.42 WHIP.
RHP Joshua Whritenour – USA Collegiate National Team / Cape Cod League
Joshua Whritenour pitched for both the USA Collegiate National Team and in the Cape Cod League this summer. Across three relief appearances at CNT Training Camp, Whritenour turned in three shutout, no-hit innings. He walked two and fanned three batters en route to a 0.67 WHIP. Whritenour made the official roster for the team but did not make an appearance in the World Collegiate Baseball Championship.
After the conclusion of the Collegiate National Team, Whritenour made three appearances for the Brewster Whitecaps, allowing three earned runs in 4.1 innings. He didn’t allow a walk but surrendered six hits and three hit-by-pitches.
C Jon Embury – Cape Cod League
FGCU catcher transfer Jon Embury played in 15 games with the Hyannis Harbor Hawks this summer. In 61 plate appearances and 50 at-bats, Embury hit .320 with three doubles and a .380 slugging percentage. He walked eight times and posted a .426 on-base percentage.
OF Cash Strayer – Cape Cod League
A Cape Cod League All-Star selection, outfielder Cash Strayer hit .225 with three home runs, two doubles and 12 RBI in 98 at-bats with the Brewster White Caps. He also stole five bases and drew 16 walks, leading to a .353 on-base percentage.
Strayer got off to a great start over the summer but cooled off toward the end.
RHP / INF Caden McDonald – Cape Cod League
Gators two-way player Caden McDonald only played about a week in the Cape Cod League, making two appearances on the mound and playing in four games offensively for the Wareham Gatemen. He allowed four earned runs and six hits in six innings on the mound, striking out seven and walking three.
In four at-bats, McDonald recorded two hits, including a double. He also walked once.
LHP Jackson Hoyt – Cape Cod League
Jackson Hoyt made nine appearances spanning 19 innings for the Wareham Gatemen this summer, allowing 14 runs on 17 hits. Only eight of those runs were earned, giving him a 3.79 ERA. Hoyt struggled with his command, walking 18 batters and hitting four, resulting in a 1.82 WHIP. He struck out 20.
RHP Schuyler Sandford – Cape Cod League
Schuyler Sandford posted one of the most bizarre pitching lines I’ve ever seen. He allowed just five runs, all earned, and 11 hits over 14.2 innings (3.07 ERA) with the Brewster Whitecaps despite walking 20 batters and hitting another. Sandford posted a 2.11 WHIP.
C Everett Marshall – Cape Cod League
Samford transfer catcher Everett Marshall appeared in 15 games for the Chatham Anglers this summer. In 51 plate appearances and 41 at-bats, Marshall slashed .195/.353/.390 with two home runs, two doubles and eight RBI. He drew nine walks and struck out 18 times.
RHP Cameron Haynes – FCSL
True freshman Cameron Hanes pitched in the Florida Collegiate Summer League, posting a 3.65 ERA and a 1.09 WHIP over 24.2 innings. He struck out 34 batters and walked just seven, good for an impressive 4.86 strikeout-to-walk ratio. Hanes held opposing batters to a .222 batting average.
